I disagree but it is just an opinion. We fans don't get to see what the managers do, as in training and the personality/traits of players, so we can only judge them on what we see when they play a match. I thought Nathan Webb seemed disgruntled about being in and out of the side and the managers seemingly favouring Simon Dunn. I know Simon is a favourite of yours,RR.  For me Simon Dunn will get more goals than Nathan Webb but I thought Nathan's work rate, tackling and defensive capabilities were better than Simon's[ he has plenty of energy around the field but tackling isn't his forte'].  I also thought Nathan Webb was a handy player to have in the squad given his versatility in a number of positions. Funny enough,as a pairing in centre midfield I can't say I would have gone for Webb and Dunn together, if it were my decision. I didn't think they played well together.

For me Ryan Hope is the one that got away, at the wrong time for him and us. Had he not got carried away with his ego, and had his ear bent by an agent, I thought he had a bright future in the game and I was expecting Bakes and Unders to take him from strength to strength. He may of left the club but I still like him as a player and he has enjoyed modest success in the teams he's played for since, albeit at a lower level.

The move to Hayes and Yeading might be a blessing in disguise for Francis Armartey, as he will definitely get more games with them than he would have got at Slough. Francis was a victim of Dan Roberts success at our club. I was disappointed that we didn't play Dan and Francis together more often. Money wise it appears right for Slough but for me it seemed a waste to get rid of him so early especially after such a great first season at the club.

As you say 3spirit it's funny how people see different things when they watch games.

My biggest gripe with Nathan Webb was his work rate and movement or lack of it to be precise. He was IMO a 'stroller' who had ability and did some good things when the ball was given to him but for me his movement and effort was sadly lacking. On the other hand Simon Dunn was the complete opposite, his game was all about effort and work rate combined with a lot of ability on the ball. Ok Dunny was a non tackler but if he could he would have been the perfect player and playing a lot higher up the pyramid.

No doubt Ryan Hope had ability but even at the level we were playing at for me he didn't stand out as our best best player. It seems to ring a bell that his agent might have been his brother but either way his demands ensured that he was a goner as far as his future with us.

It's only my opinion but Francis Amartey has all the ability but needs to work on his movement and work rate. If he does then I think he will go a lot further in his football career.

Refresh my memory, somebody.

When Byron Thorne pulled the plug, we lost our status as a Conference team and thus lost Brian McDermott as manager.

The following season 1998 - 1999 was the start of Martyn Deaner's chairmanship and we only had 2 players left from the previous Conference season, that of Paul Wilkerson and Mark Fiore.

We then had a hastily put together scratch team but who was our first, first team manager, and also coach for the commencement of that season?  I don't think it wasn't Paul Hardyman to start with.

Hardyman took control for the start of the season before being replaced by Roberts about 7 or 8 games in. I think there were five players which stayed in total, including the two that you've named. Graeme McVie looks like another (was on the bench vs Sutton for that opening game in the 98/99 season)

Graham Roberts brought Steve Daly to the club.

Gary, I thought Graham Kemp might of started the season as player coach/manager for first 3 or 4 games. Then Paul Hardyman got the proper manager job, to then be replaced with Graham Roberts after about 10 to 12 games. Though I'm not at all sure on this.

Daly signed from Boreham Wood in February 1999 I think, signed by Roberts, as we then went on a run of clean sheets with Daly's arrival.

More like Graham Roberts at the helm, and him also starting in the centre half position alongside Steve Daly !

I was particularly impressed by Micky Engwell. I thought he was class. No wonder Roberts took him to every club with him. Graham Roberts brought in some very good players but I don't suppose they were cheap.

I thought Leon Townley was a far better centre half than Steve Daly. Townley was also signed by Graham Roberts.

Don't know how true it was but there was a rumour going around at the time, that Townley was fond of sniffing substances! Perhaps that's why he never got on further.

TBF Leon Townley had a good pedigree when he came to us having started at Spurs and then signing a 3 year contract at Brentford.

I was quite surprised to see that he was only 22 when he joined us.

After leaving us he joined Aldershot playing 42 games and after that hardly played any football at all so something certainly went wrong in his career.

It's a pity we only saw him at the back end of his career and not at his peak.

I still thought he was a good player for Slough. Very skilful player in my book. Seemed to be under rated by many of the Slough crowd, I thought.

You have shocked me,too, if Leon Townley was only 22 when signed, as he looked so assured and comfortable on the ball and was coolness personified. Towards the end of his stint with Slough he looked totally disinterested in what he was doing but perhaps that was more to do with what Steve Browne was telling him to do!

Townley did also have a spell with Windsor after and you never knew in the Deaner regime how much wages were actually getting to the players each year, so that too may have also played a factor. I vaguely remember his debut and being mightily impressed with him, but as with many exciting talents who appeared for us around that time, never appeared to push on sadly.
