Bit of a long post, but the first of hopefully a few updates of reports and images we've been working on to add to the match report and player archive on the Official Website whilst we're enduring this downtime without football. We've been able to restore 107 reports from backups or newspaper clippings which were missing from the site and have also been able to add or update a few pictures for some of the past players.

Still got over 400 reports to work on to get onto the site dating back from the early 80's through to 2007 and we'll add further posts as these are ready for viewing.

Hope they're of interest to some!

Thanks Adrian. It's been a project of mine, utilising the wonderful resources we have available from Alan Smith, to get as much information through our clubs website as we can for quite a few years now. Glad to hear people are enjoying looking back!

Alan Smith has a fund of stuff to show me at most home games!! He lives in Slough Library, writes everything out longhand.

Well done Gary, I dip in and out to catch up with matches, particularly those I can remember being at.

Is great to be able to watch footage of some of the games as well. Had a trip down memory lane, a couple of days ago watching games from the 2011/12 season. Brings the games back to life, as if they were played yesterday.

A good one from that season was when Slough beat Ashford 4-3 at home[at Beaconsfield]. Well worth a view.

Credit to Steve Bateman, his sides did like to play attacking football. He certainly signed some good players.

His biggest flaw was his team selection, as you never knew what side he would put out and too often he changed players around for no logical reason.

I'm sure if Bakes and Unders had had the players that Steve had over his period in charge, promotion would have been achieved earlier. I know that wouldn't have been as straightforward as it sounds because both have very different ways of running things. Steve Bateman risked having different types of characters in his squads a lot. Bakes/Unders tend to be much more formulaic in their approach to the type of player they get on board, and seem to have a better understanding of what works and what doesn't.

In entertainment value terms, I wouldn't say there's much between them.

Thanks Gary, keep up the good work.

I am continuing to fill in the gaps on the site from the 2005/6 and 2006/7 seasons before focusing on the older material we have available to us which covers a lot of games from 1980 through to 2003. I'll continue to update this thread as and when we've uploaded further reports.

We've also found many reports from games against Wycombe and Maidenhead dating back to the early 1900's in some instances which we will be adding in due course.

It was certainly interesting going back through the 2005/06 season. Remembering just how good Clark Masters was for his time with us (one huge mistake against Windsor in the Easter game aside), how much of our attacks went through McCleary, Ballard's long throws, Josias Carbon down the right, some great goals from Glen Harris and just watching Ian Hodges again. Fond memories of that era, despite all the off field concerns with Martyn Deaner's leadership.

Enjoy!

Each to their own, Gary but can't say I was ever impressed with Clark Masters, to be honest. I actually preferred Michael Parkin at the time but he, too had weaknesses.  Neither were terrible keepers, as far as keepers go but neither were commanding or had much of a presence about them and so to me I would have been on the lookout for a better one.

When I look at the squad we had in 2005/06 I see it as being rather limited in what it had to offer. Not saying we didn't have good players because we did. All those other ones you mention [aside from Masters] were worth their place in the team but to me we were carrying a lot of dead wood, too.  I thought we persevered with a few players that were well past their sell by date.

The trouble back then, was the inconsistency of the players wages turning up, as under Martyn Deaners chairmanship/reign, it seemed so haphazard as to whether players would get paid or not. There was often times when the club seemed awash with money, given the signings that came in, only for the wheels to come off mid season and then lose the players. The turnover of players at the club in his tenure was phenomenal.

2005/2006 was a one of the better years in terms of the stability on and off the field but changes looked needed come the end of the season and I wasn't surprised when a lot of new players arrived for the start of 2006/07. It didn't quite pan out how one would have liked but that pre-season was an exciting one.

I thought Clark Masters was an ok keeper.

I think Jake Whincup, who played for us the season before in 2004/5 making 17 appearances on loan from Hornchurch was a much better keeper.

Wasn't the start of one game at Stag Meadow delayed for a period of time because the players refused to come out of the changing rooms because they were not being paid?

As 3s said, the 05/06 season was relatively stable, likely if it did happen it would have been during the torrid 06/07 season where we only picked up a handful of points and used Sunday League standard players at points through the season.

As for Masters, looking back through the videos which I used to formulate the majority of the reports, he pulled off some fantastic saves in some of those. Parkin's confidence, and that in him from the defenders in front of him, notably Daly, was shot and he could never recover from it sadly.

Michael Parkin was only a young lad at the time. Didn't he come through the youth team?

I thought he got put in the deep end but did ok but to me he was an easy scapegoat to blame for defeats, as he was the inexperienced novice player, and who was going to blame Steve Daly and company [other experienced players in the team] for the defeats?  Our novice manager at the time wasn't !

I understood bringing a keeper in on loan but thought others in the team got away scot free of blame because they were the senior players at the club and some were fan favourites and also favourites of our owner. I would have given Michael Parkin more time. I thought we killed his confidence in one fell swoop when he was replaced by Clark Masters.

By the way, Gary, on the reports on the 2005/06 there is someone called Josh Millar playing for Slough up front !  That should read Matt Miller.

3s - memory failure for you! Josh Millar was a young striker who came into the team during that season. Miller came back the following year (06/07).

As for Parkin, I rated him highly at the time and he deservedly won his place in the team ahead of Shaun Allaway in the 2004/5 season. Watching the videos back of the 05/06 season though, it's clear to see both the keeper's confidence, and that of his defence in front of him had gone and that changes the way you defend and set up as a team. I think it was the Maldon game where a long ball through should have been collected by Parkin as the striker didn't connect with it until about ten yards out was the final straw.

Lovely guy, really nice family too. Saw him when he came with Hitchin I think a few years back as he was part of their coaching setup and was good to have a little catch up with him.

Did Michael Parkin win his place in front of Shaun Allaway?   Can't see that being the case. More like Shaun Allaway wasn't interested or was carrying an injury.

Strange one with Shaun Allaway. It was like he couldn't be bothered with football anymore. Did he play anywhere after Slough? I seem to think he may of gone to Staines Town, and Thatcham [much later] but do not know for certain.

Was at Staines for the following two seasons as he featured against us for Staines during our four league matches against them. If I remember rightly, Allaway's kicking was his major flaw and it may just have been a lack of desire at the time, or he didn't fancy the competition. Parkin definitely usurped him that season though (04/05)

You've got a good memory, Gary !

It never ceases to amaze me, how people [fans, managers, coaches etc]  watching football players can view them so differently, and come to such complete opposite opinions on them.  I don't mean you here Gary, I mean in general.

I remember thinking Lee Endersby[ex Harrow Borough/England semi pro] was class playing for Slough and yet nobody seemed to rate him,as they thought he was a luxury player. I remember raving about Simon Ullathorne, who then only preceded to play a handful of games under Steve Browne.

While the complete opposite happened with my view of Christian Metcalfe. The Slough masses loved him, I thought he was vastly over rated and a dirty player. He became a good servant to Slough but I can't say I took to him, until he turned out in the Slough Legends match!

Steve Daly is another one, I was mystified how he played so many games for Slough,as I thought at times he couldn't trap a bag of cement but to his credit, he always performed well in the big matches, and there's no argument what a great servant he was to our club. He obviously had something about him to be chosen by Graham Roberts no less but I can't say he ever really won me over.

That's the great thing about watching football, we don't all see it the same way.

Funny enough, thats one thing I do like about Bakes and Unders as managers. There is not many players, that they've signed or discarded, when I  haven't agreed with their judgement.  Of course, there's been a few but not loads, like many of the managers we've had at Slough.           I thought we got rid of Jamie McClurg, Chris Henry, Nathan Webb, Ryan Hope and Francis Amartey too soon and have kept a couple of players too long but by and large, I've agreed with the vast majority of their decisions. Long may that continue! ha ha!

I thought Nathan Webb was past his sell by date had run his course with us.

Ryan Hope had delusions of grandeur beyond his capabilities and it was right that we got shot of him.

Francis is a gifted young player that has a lot to learn so in order to progress in his career he needed to play games on a regular basis.

I disagree but it is just an opinion. We fans don't get to see what the managers do, as in training and the personality/traits of players, so we can only judge them on what we see when they play a match. I thought Nathan Webb seemed disgruntled about being in and out of the side and the managers seemingly favouring Simon Dunn. I know Simon is a favourite of yours,RR.  For me Simon Dunn will get more goals than Nathan Webb but I thought Nathan's work rate, tackling and defensive capabilities were better than Simon's[ he has plenty of energy around the field but tackling isn't his forte'].  I also thought Nathan Webb was a handy player to have in the squad given his versatility in a number of positions. Funny enough,as a pairing in centre midfield I can't say I would have gone for Webb and Dunn together, if it were my decision. I didn't think they played well together.

For me Ryan Hope is the one that got away, at the wrong time for him and us. Had he not got carried away with his ego, and had his ear bent by an agent, I thought he had a bright future in the game and I was expecting Bakes and Unders to take him from strength to strength. He may of left the club but I still like him as a player and he has enjoyed modest success in the teams he's played for since, albeit at a lower level.

The move to Hayes and Yeading might be a blessing in disguise for Francis Armartey, as he will definitely get more games with them than he would have got at Slough. Francis was a victim of Dan Roberts success at our club. I was disappointed that we didn't play Dan and Francis together more often. Money wise it appears right for Slough but for me it seemed a waste to get rid of him so early especially after such a great first season at the club.
