On This Day

Thanks for putting these up Gary. I can't believe the Hitchin play-off is ten years ago; I can clearly recall the emotions during and after the game as if it was yesterday.

I see you've missed out the pitch invasion at the end that (if memory serves me correctly) one of the local papers at the time falsely claimed had happened!

First one for 28th April.

2007, a sponsored walk, and the home team promoted.

Hampton v Slough

Hampton (A) 2-4 28/04/07 + Walk

The season where we managed to produce the remarkably poor stats of finishing 28 points adrift at the bottom of the table having scored only 8 goals at home all season in the league and only 28 goals in total.

The not so good day's with Del Boy at the helm.

I can't remember but was he in charge for more than a season?

I thought Derek Sweetman started off well, given that he had to completely rebuild the team but come the end of his reign, had lost the plot and if anything, stayed too loyal to some of the players, by the time Christmas had arrived.

Steve Bateman didn't have an easy ride when he took over from Derek, and it took till his first full season, to really make his mark.

I thought he made a mistake getting rid of Yashwa Romeo for 2009 season. I would have let go Danny Jordan instead. I know that won't be popular with some Slough fans from that period but to me by then seemed to be on the wane.

I liked centre half Luke Evans, who was Derek Sweetman's captain but he looked decidedly unhappy playing for Bateman, so it seemed the right decision of a new manager to clear him out.

Steve got it right keeping Ryan Fenton, Dean Harper,Jamie Jackson and Kyle Jeffery for the start of 2009 but the writing looked on the wall for them, as quality signings arrived, though, Tommy Hayes wasn't one of them ! Amazingly he scored a few goals in his initial season, which was even more stunning, given the fact that he seemed to want nothing to do with the ball !

As much as it sticks in the craw to say, Chesham were far better than Slough on the day and ran out deserved winners. A few of our players suffered from nerves and lost their way unfortunately.

Slough didn't really do themselves justice that day, as they were a better team ,than what they showed in the final.

I think we played our cup final when we beat Hitchin in the semi final.

The final against Chesham was a step too far for our players who looked jaded and lethargic on the day.

Credit to Chesham who looked good on the day but we were certainly a pale imitation of the side from the semi final.
