Last of the look backs for 19th April.

2014 McClurg scored with a blaster of a shot in the home game against Rugby.

19-04-14 Slough Town v Rugby Town

With Ed Smith receiving a red card for a senseless and reckless challenge on the Rugby keeper, we were comfortably beaten 2-1 on the day by Rugby.

We then went on to produce a devastatingly clinical performance to hammer Rugby 3-0 in the play off semi final.

I think we were very lucky that day not to have Ed Smith sent off early in the game for another recklessly high challenge on the same keeper.

The red card in this game was due to disgraceful play acting by the keeper. The one in the semi final was obviously motivated by the previous injustice, however, was a crazy and needless act that was much more worthy of a red card than the one that was given. I feel that had smithy been dismissed again in the semi, he probably would never have played for us again.

Agree that the first red card for Ed Smith was exacerbated by the Rugby keeper play acting but there's no doubt that contact was made with keeper and Smith didn't help his cause by his reaction to the incident.

I also agree that the incident in the semi final was for me a definite red card and how it wasn't is still baffling to this day.

That one reckless act could have completely changed the game, result and ultimately where we are today as a club.

Brilliantly gifted player Ed Smith but total mad man at times, who would often lose the plot for the slightest of reasons.

IMO that's the reason he never played at a higher level. Good enough to but too much of a liability, as likely to cost his team points.

Not sure whats happened here Gary but the match details on our main site says the score was 0-4 which is obviously incorrect.

My Facebook “memory” from this day in 2007 is ‘off out to see the Rebels get another spanking’. I wasn’t wrong, we lost the game 0-4.

Looking back on records on other sites it seems the score was 0-4.

Photos only show 1 goal being scored for Chelmsford and 1 disallowed goal for Slough.
