Kaiser Gibbs Batman (KGB)
Saddened to read on the website of the passing of Bernie Gogan whose first game in Slough colours I watched at Champion Hill as a secondary schoolboy. It was the first of many and included most of the games in the 1964/65 Athenian League Division 1 championship, the winning of which owed so much to his devastatingly effective partnership with Peter Lowen. A proper centre-forward he could always be depended upon to put in a full shift in the team's cause. He and Marion were always pleasant to the young supporters who occasionally got to travel on the team coach to away matches. People who watch football regularly over the years get to see and appreciate very many players of different generations but few excite like the heroes of one's youth. RIP Bernie. RIP Bernie. 64-65 was my first season watching the Rebels was a great time watching them most of the team were local boys and boss Bob Gibbs was a teacher in Slough. As you say Ber nie would run through brick walls for the team remember his bullet headers and his partnership with Peter Lowen who was the most frustrating player on the pitch for 80 minutes then bang two or three goals.RIP Bernie thanks for the memories and your great service. I was one year of age in 1964, so didn't get to see Bernie Gogan but by what you say here , Carols52, he sounds like my type of player and a player Bakes and Unders would be interested in, if around today. Comparing players from yester-year to modern day players is so hard to do, as the game has taken on such a different complexion through the years but to me talent is talent no matter what year you are born in. RIP Mr Gogan.

And most of my earliest "heroes", many of whom crossed the river in 1959 to take the black and white shilling.
