Away to the potentially massive MAIDSTONE UNITED

Recommended Posts

Although I lived in Maidstone from 1956 to 1959, there is a bit more to my optimism than pure partisanism.

Under the management of John Still, the old Maidstone United won the Football Conference in 1988-9 to win a place in the Football League. John Still then resigned as manager rather than become full time. After three seasons in the Football League, the club went into liquidation.

Now, thirty years later, the vastly experienced John Still is back at the helm as Head of Football with the very experienced Hakan Hayrettin as Head Coach.

After winning the Isthmian League in 2014/5, Maidstone United won promotion from National League South at the first attempt in 2015/6 by winning the play-off final 3-4 on penalties at Ebbsfleet United with an average league home gate of 2,208.

They finished 14th. in the 2016/7 National League with a home record of 8-5-10 and an average home gate of 2,386.

They finished 19th. in 2017/8 with a home record of 6-9-8 and an average home gate of 2,412 after a bewildering season. On 16.9.17, they won 1-4 at the eventual title winners Macclesfield Town. On 4.11.17, they won 2-4 at Cheltenham Town in the FA Cup 1st. Round. On 16.12.17, they won 0-4 at Torquay United in the FA Trophy 1st. Round and on 6.1.18, drew 4-4 in National League at Woking after being 2-3 and 3-4 up. However, these goalscoring outbursts were not consistent throughout the season with just 25 league goals at home in 23 matches and 27 away.

I never got to the bottom of what had been going on, but they finished 24th. in 2018/9 with a home record of  3-4-16 and an average home gate of 2,179.

At the start of the 2019/20 season, there were 2,015 at The Gallagher Stadium for the 1-2 home defeat to Weymouth and 1,713 for the goalless draw against Eastbourne Borough.

I think the visiting fans will enjoy the Gallagher Stadium on Saturday, particularly as there is a very good bar. There should be a large crowd and with Maidstone United not currently being where they wish to be, Slough Town might get something from the match.

Weren't the 'potentially massive' Maidstone once in the football league?

Yeah I read that and with the vast majority bringing no more than 30 away fans it’s utterly pointless but I guess from their viewpoint they can’t take the risk. At least we’re in their big covered stand and not plonked our in the open.
