Shenfield AFC 7 The 61 FC (Luton) 0

A real anorak from another Forum was at this one yesterday, I thought the kick off time was advertised as 3.00 and not 2.15:

Anagram Records Trophy, First Round (2.15 pm plus 30 mins)
Shenfield AFC 7 The 61 FC (Luton) 0 (H/T 3-0)
Entry - Free
Programme - 8 pages, free
Crowd - c. 15

I had been seriously considering the Earsham game, but eventually I decided on another game for which a one-off programme was being produced. Shenfield AFC do not normally produce but as issuing is compulsory in this cup competition, I decided to tick their ground instead. It should be noted though that they do a weekly newsletter on-line and it might be possible to print this off if you attend a game for which there is no programme.

An unusual venue to tick for me too, because this game was played at the 3G pitch at St Martin's Comprehensive School in Shenfield. This was actually the first time I had ever been inside a comprehensive school, let alone for a football match. The school is only about 15 minutes walk from Shenfield station if you take a short cut through a very posh private housing estate. Some of the houses there are so opulent that I doubt whether the children living there attend the school the match was being played at. The entrance is in Hanging Hill Lane but the car entrance is slightly further south in the same road, but via a driveway called St Martin's Close, which does not always appear on maps. The football ground is hidden behind buildings but the floodlights can just about be seen from Hanging Hill Lane. It is the usual 3G cage but there is a railed off spectator viewing area running the full length of the west side, which may be unusual for a school venue. This side is surrounded by grass banking (outside the cage) which continues behind the north goal and there is even a wooden covered area with bench seats, on the west side. Although outside the cage it was useful for some spectators who, unlike myself, had arrived without umbrellas on a wet afternoon. It was probably built to serve as a shelter for school pupils during the lunch break.

The home team and match officials got changed in a small brick dressing-room building next to an open-air swimming pool, while the visitors, whose late arrival caused the kick-off to be put back to 14.45 got changed in a gym. There was some sort of event taking place at the school so there were a lot of people coming and going throughout the afternoon and because of this there were refreshments available inside one of the school buildings.

Both teams were bottom of their respective league tables without any wins before the start of the game, so I had been expecting a close game. However, the visitors were very poor and although the first goal did not arrive until the 25th minute, the final score was a fair reflection of play. Shenfield are away to Sandridge Rovers in the next round, and if they also win that one, they will be at home in the quarter-finals on Leap Day.

Hampton Town FC are a Middlesex County Division One team and this is there first season formed so that's a decent result for them.

Savagebee - An anorak from another Forum was at their game on Saturday (see attached) and saw a thriller, according to Epping Town's match report above though Hampton won 8-7 on penalties, not 7-6:

Two First Round results yesterday involving SSML Club's, I gather Sarratt and Bovingdon both played extremely well. Chipperfield Corinthians v Bovingdon is a local derby of Rangers v Celtic proportions so Karen's attendance figure will be interesting:

Mursley United travel to the delights of Essex Olympian League Division One outfit Galleywood tomorrow, a small village off the beaten track near Chelmsford, it will be an interesting trip for the Station Road Club who would then travel to Buckhurst Hill in the Second Round if successful:

Second Round draw: Yeading Town v Hilltop or Hinton, Larkspur Rovers v Letchworth Garden City Eagles, Tring Corinthians AFC v Raleigh Tow, Bovingdon v Sporting Hackney, Sandridge Rovers v Shenfield AFC, Buckhurst Hill v Galleywood or Mursley United, Hampton Town v Sarratt, Hutton v Old Bradwell United or FC Hamlets

Mursley United sadly went down 2-0 on Saturday at Galleywood leaving just Sarratt, Tring Corinthians AFC and Bovingdon definitely through to the second round of the competition, although Old Bradwell United should join them on 2 November.

Saturday's First Round tie at Abbey Road was called off due to the inclement weather and will now take place on Saturday 23 November, kick off 2.00pm. Bovingdon's Second Round tie with Sporting Hackney takes place at Green Lane a week later on Saturday 30 November, kick off 2.00pm, no news as yet on when Sarratt travel to Hampton Town or when Tring Corinthians AFC host Raleigh Town unless Karen knows something.

All Second Round matches are on Saturday 30 November and Sarratt will not be travelling to Hampton Town, the hosts have requested the game be played at Sarratt on the 30 November.

Karen - This is where your inside information is invaluable but you don't share it with us on here, I normally have to scrabble around for information in the dark and second guess in order to keep SSML fans reliably informed but you're quick enough to tell me when I get a fixture or a result wrong. I don't envy your workload though and you must be dreading the 1962/63 type winter that is forecast.

Not 100% surprised by that as I'm told Hampton Towns facilities are very basic to say the least and there pitch is not the best.

Old Bradwell United entertain ProKit UK Essex Olympian League Division One outfit FC Hamlets tomorrow who ply their trade on the infamous Hackney Marshes in East London, hopefully there will be no more rain and the game at Abbey Road will go ahead following the postponement on Saturday 2 November:

Old Bradwell United will be kicking themselves to go down 3-2 on spot kicks yesterday to FC Hamlets from the ProKit UK Essex Olympian League Division One after a hard fought 0-0 stalemate in ninety minutes. In a tie that was switched to the 3G surface at the Sir Herbert Leon Academy Sports Ground in Bletchley at the eleventh hour to avoid a postponement at Abbey Road, FC Hamlets goalkeeper Nick Pyne won man of the match for some fine saves during the ninety minutes and his kicking ability as well as three saves in the penalty shoot out to send FC Hamlets through to meet Hutton and thankfully not one of the three remaining SSML Club's, Sarratt, Tring Corinthians AFC and Bovingdon.

Old Bradwell United's match report from the FC Hamlets tie on Saturday, you can tell they are disappointed with the result however it has been a great campaign for the Club thus far:

An interesting Second Round tie this afternoon at Green Lane, Bovingdon have been struggling of late whereas their Middlesex County League Premier Division opponents, Sporting Hackney, are on a run of three successive wins. Tring Corinthians AFC also host Raleigh Town this afternoon in another Second Round tie whereas Sarratt entertain Hampton Town on Saturday 14 December, a tie that was switched to Sarratt's King George V Playing Fields
