Having seen the game today against Dorking, what Slough players would fans choose for the Hungerford match?

Also, is George Wells back for this game?

Interesting choice,Radders. I think we should try a 3-5-2 more often but with our current choice of players available I'm not sure it's the appropriate situation to employ that formation.

I think we need to make up our mind what we want from Ryan Bird ie have we bought him in to be a target man, or have we bought him to be a centre half, or have we bought him in to be a jack of all trades and master of none.

So far, his games for Slough have been underwhelming but I feel we are not playing to his strengths yet. It is obvious that through injury and circumstance that his natural game has suffered in the last two seasons but I believe with time, patience and effort on our manager's part, we can get more from him. It's not like Ryan isn't trying to fit in. He is. To me, if we wanted a 6ft 5' plus centre half, we should have gone and got one in pre-season, or go now and recruit a new one but not make our newly acquired target man one !

Let's use him as a front man, for at least 6 months, unless it's  absolutely necessary to put him at the back to cover for an absent centre half. We need to establish his place in the team first, before we start to use him as a Bakes and Unders utility player.

I would use Ryan's height and strength to disrupt the oppositions defence, by getting him to focus on disrupting and making himself a nuisance to their centre halves in their penalty area, in the main, and for him to hold the ball up with his feet, to play in players like Francis, Dan, Manny, Matt etc by simple passes or by flick ons with his head/knock downs with his chest. Nothing too fancy until he get's to know how our attackers like to play. That is the classic target man role and not rocket science!  When this side of his game grows, he will then start to get more chances for himself to score. Currently, he seems all over the shop and we are over complicating what we want from him. That's not doing him a service, or is it helping our team.

Just to be clear he’s a centre forward in our eyes but an emergency centre half when required, for example when your centre half gets sent off with 5 mins to go and you’ve used all your subs like yesterday!

The reason he played there in pre-season was to give him a extra minutes on the pitch as he needed it more than others (having missed a lot of games last season) and the fact we had more centre forwards than centre backs in pre-season so it solved that problem too.

And also to be clear Bakes and I aren’t complicating things for Birdy or any other player, that’s not how we manage.

Guest Wycombe Rebel

Turner

Armsworth Hollis Togwell Fraser

Togwell Davies Worsfold

Lench Bird Dunn

4-3-3/4-5-1

Feel Lench and Dunn could unlock the door for Birdy!

Also, 3spirit, my recollection of Ryan Bird is whilst he is good in the air, he is better on the deck, the vast majority of his goals have been with his feet!

I appreciate that Ryan had to be used at the back when Sam got red carded and in pre-season for minutes but at corners he was coming back and first half in particular, our defence seemed to go in meltdown about the size of Jason Prior and the other Dorking forwards, and got suckered into bringing every man and his dog back.  Thankfully at half time you and Bakes, sorted out that mess.

I want Ryan Bird to be putting fear into the opposing defenders in their penalty area.  I wasn't one of those fans that gave him stick yesterday. To me he needs games and a defined role in what we want from him. I thought he tried hard enough to get involved in the game but did appear to be more often outside the penalty area, than in it. His timing of jumps for headers seemed off at times but he did commit to challenges, but do we need him to commit to every aerial battle outside the box in the opposition's half, just because we now have a tall player?

What I was trying to relay in my post was not a dig on your management but was to highlight that we haven't got to grips with what Ryan can do for our team, and that Ryan himself hasn't got to grips with what we want of him. Supporters are getting on at him and yet loads of them seem to want him to him to be this ultrafit yo-yo that runs from defence into attack and does things in between. That's not the game I want to see him play.

We haven't played with a big bloke up front since Brad Watkins and I know it will take time for Ryan to come to the fore, in how you and Bakes want him to play but yesterday for me I thought it appeared that we didn't know what we wanted him to do and he ended up doing donkey work.

It is only the first game and we weren't at our fluent best, so have plenty of time to put him right, I know that, but it is a good talking point for this forum! ha ha!

3spirit, haven't seen your player selection for Hungerford yet or are you keeping us all dangling on a string  ?

Thought you'd never ask! ha ha!

I think now that we know we will be without Sam Togwell for one or two games, that it is a good time to bring Scott Armsworth in, and Hungerford would be a good game for him to get involved. So I would start with a 4-4-2 of

                                          Turner

                  Armsworth   Hollis  S.Togwell   Fraser

                  Lench         L.Togwell   Davies    Worsfold

                                       Amartey   Bird

Subs: W.Harris, Dunn, B.Harris, Williams,Trinivas

If we can get a lead on Hungerford,in the second half I would put Scott Armsworth alongside Guy Hollis and Sam Togwell as 3 centre backs, to see how they get on together. Nothing like a proper match to see if a young centre half can cope playing there.

I like the idea of Cookham Rebel, to play two players up front off of Ryan Bird but for me too early for Ryan Bird to try it out, and not necessarily the players I would choose to play off him either. So I'd stick to the usual 4-4-2 to start with.

Match preview (Hungerford Town FC website)

Both these sides made losing starts to there national league south season and both will want to bounce back on Tuesday night. No need for panic stations for either side, there are still 41 games left to rectify one defeat. However, a win for either would be a huge confidence boost and with August packed with eight fixtures at least 3 wins are probably essential to stay outside the relegation zone. This Berkshire derby will be another indicator of where Ian Herrings young side are at and he will be hoping home advantage can pay dividends to claim three points.

Form guide- Visitors Slough were stunned 1-0 by newly promoted Dorking in there first league match of the season whilst Hungerford were well beat 4-1 by Hemel Hempstead.

Team news- Sam Togwell was sent off for the Rebels on Saturday but will still be available for the trip across Berkshire. Mark Nisbet, Dan Roberts, Josh Jackman and Joe Grant all missed the defeat due to injury and aren't expected to play a part on Tuesday. The hosts have no injury concerns and are expected to name the same squad that played against Hemel.

Star man- Goalkeeper Jack Turner kept Slough in the game with Dorking when his team mates weren't playing well and will expect to be busy again on Tuesday. Hoping to beat him will be James Constable for Hungerford who battled hard on Saturday and will be the main goal threat on Tuesday.

Head to head- Last season, it as two wins from two for Slough. The rebels won 2-0 at Arbour Park before a 2-1 win at Bulpit Lane later in the season.

Hope the section from star man Jack Turner down is pinned up in the dressing room before the game.
