Slough v Dorking

Recommended Posts

I decided not to comment until I had watched Ade Gomme's highlights.

I had some paperwork to look at during the first half so I sat in the east stand.

I thought that it was an excellent first half of football and was pleased to hear Ade close off the first half with "It's been an entertaining game".

I was watching TWO good teams playing each other and Dorking Wanderers tall and powerful forwards were asking many questions of the Slough Town defence.

Sam Togwell did what he had to do on 87 minutes but don't take it away from the tall and powerful Dorking Wanderers forward Giuseppe Sole who had got in that position.

As for the Dorking Wanderers winner, there are many professions where a basic rule, even in this day and age,  is "do not get distracted in your work",  but when players see such a decisive and dominant raised flag I am sure that it is very difficult for them to collectively instantly react by thinking. "Ignore it and wait for the whistle".

The argument that we should have played to the whistle is a complete nonsense.

IMO the only relevant question as to whether the goal should have been allowed is 'was the player who was offside i.e. Giuseppe Sole interfering with play or not'

To be fair we are told at referee briefings now that the assistants will not put up a flag unless it is offside, and they feel a player is interfering with play, Sole for them was 4/5 yards off and goes towards the ball (as clearly seen on video) and the assistant puts his flag up, our players stop as we are told if the flag goes up we are told it is off...... the fact the ref overrules the assistant and plays on gives them a clear run on goal and a huge advantage, and whilst they might have still been in if we hadn’t of stopped, it would have by no means been so easy, as Briggs started a few yards behind Dunny.

The facts are the assistant official has a huge impact in it, as if he puts the flag up the ref should give it (as he has believed they have had an advantage).

But let’s be honest this is where the offside rule is still a joke, just so you know the official admitted his mistake in the changing room, and apologised for it, does not get us our point back.

Anyway that is football, and why we love and hate it.

A word for the “supporters” that directed abuse at a few of our players on the first game of the season, support your team and players..... really really poor comments from a minority.

Never nice to hear your own fans getting on someone’s back. Always seems to occur at home hardly ever away!  Always counter productive but at this level it makes little sense , I’ve been frustrated by players in Slough shirts over the years but have never resorted to negative comments. What’s the point!  Even more ridiculous at the first game with many regulars missing.

As to the game , thought we ebbed and flowed a bit . Much better second half especially when Francis came on. I have high hopes for him this season . Think he was the main reason we had such a great run at the end of last season. I would hate to be a defender facing him. He gives the team a reliable outlet from Jack, defence or midfield . Think Scotty coming back will suit him as well .

Shame about the loss but its going to be a tough first few weeks. No reason to think its not going to be another enjoyable season though.

Some very generous comments from Slough supporters. Thanks Guys.  I gather Marc was happy with his first game of the season.

With regards to our late goal, when I was involved with coaching Dorking Ladies, (now defunct), I can't remember how many times I have shouted, "PLAY TO THE WHISTLE !!"

I'm  also with the play to the whistle brigade.  Its been claimed that nowadays if the linesman raises his flag its offside. If only. Truth is that if he raises his flag its offside in his opinion and the referee can always overrule the linesman  I'm  willing to bet Neil/Jon has given the lads advise on their future behaviour in similar circumstances!

As I said it's only based on one viewing and could well be wrong but at least it's an opinion.

My opinion would be different to yours not for me top half.

Also well done Jack for getting in National Southern League team of the day carrying on from last season with some superb saves during the game.Briggs for Dorking also in team.

Respect your opinion CR but on actual play and chances created over the 90+ minutes I don't think any one can dispute that Dorking deserved to win.

I thought Matt Briggs did ok but IMO was certainly not the best player on the pitch.

I thought their number 9 James McShane was a handful and won most balls that went into the box and possibly number 20 Luke Moore was their best player.

I don't always watch the highlights of home games but had a watch of the Dorking game and Ade commented at the end of the first half that both sides had 6 chances to score each, just goes to show that Dorking were not deserving of the win, given that Slough were in the ascendancy in second half.   Dorking probably had clearer chances being that Jack made some good saves but in terms of everything else there was nothing between the sides until they scored the last minute goal.

It's funny when watch highlights of a game, as players can look a lot better in the highlights, than they do in the live 90 minutes !

One Dorking player that I was impressed by was their number 8, I think his name is something McManus.Don't know anything about him but he seemed involved in a lot of their movement from midfield.

I'm glad to hear your differing opinion SD after all that's what forums are all about.

3spirit there might have been 6 chances each in the first half but as you quite rightly say yourself Dorking had by far the better quality chances which they really should have scored from whilst we only had the one from Ryan Bird.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this but for me because of the quality of chances missed especially in the first half I think Dorking deserved their win.

Just to say Chris who who stands with my group next to the dugout and fell ill during the game and spent the 2nd half in the ambulance I found out at the Weymouth game he went to hospital and was only let out to go home last week.

I believe Alex the physio attended to him so would like to thank him and volunteers.

Wish Chris all the best in his recovery and hope to see at a game when fully fit soon.

Would also mention I thought having sercurity stewards was a rule from the league as I wondered why Hungerford and Concord did not have them but have since found out it is from the Council. Well four of us went to the ambulance when the game finished so you have the paramedics doing there work and about  5.15 the head steward came over and told one of them that they had to move the ambulance out of the ground so they could lock up talk about having commonsense when someone was very ill. He was way out of order.

There should be a plan set in place as this situation could happen any time at a home game.
