Slough v Dorking

Having been outplayed in the first half, it was a much better second half performance and we were looking likely to come away with a point.

Then possibly the most inept performance from an official we are likely (and hopefully) to see all season totally ruins the game. I can only hope that an assessor was at the game and saw it and the linesman is demoted to the subbuteo league.

Where were all of the Dorking fans were were promised?

Hope the person who was struck by the ball is ok.

We go again on Tuesday.

Had my doubts on many away support turning up when they were still trying to drum up last minute support to fill a coach at £10 a pop.

Someone said it was a female who got the ball on the nose but thankfully was ok.

Hmmm scrappy game, thought Briggs was the best player on the pitch and knew he’d score, typical. Wouldn’t say either team deserved to win, know it’s only 1 game gone but I am concerned by our lack of goal threat

What happed by the stand after they scored with their bench?!?!

Respect your opinion CR but on actual play and chances created over the 90+ minutes I don't think any one can dispute that Dorking deserved to win.

I thought Matt Briggs did ok but IMO was certainly not the best player on the pitch.

I thought their number 9 James McShane was a handful and won most balls that went into the box and possibly number 20 Luke Moore was their best player.

It reminded me a little bit of the opening game against Kettering a couple of years back when we got promoted to this division, not much in it but they may of been the better of the two teams overall.

Not great from the big signings over the summer but let's show some patience and encouragement. I thought Dorking looked decent.

I thought Ryan Bird grew into the game and was involved in a lot of play. He certainly tried hard enough but with the injuries we have, he is playing up front and being asked to go into the defence at times. We have not had a target man properly for years and so it will take time for Bakes and Unders to get to grips with what they want from Ryan, plus it will take time for Ryan to 'bed' in with our attackers. I saw plenty from him that can be honed and made effective for our team.

It's a pity he didn't take his chance to score today, as I think his confidence will grow once he starts getting a few. I just think we shouldn't expect him to challenge for every high ball and that he can get every one of them. If anything, I think Ryan's game has suffered because of managers wanting him just for heading tennis.

Max Worsfold, on the other hand, worked hard enough but is struggling to affect the game but I'm sure that will come over time, too. All players need time to settle in to a new team.Once George Wells is back and Matt Lench is leading the way in midfield we will start to see more of Max IMO

Not been his biggest fan, but Matt Lench was colossal today. Shame he was on the losing side.

Also, felt Max Worsfold was hot and cold, but created some gilt-edged chances. On another day, we win with a couple of assists from Max. On to Hungerford.

Love to know why you're not his biggest fan.

As you say he was our best player today and has IMO been by far our best player in pre-season.

To me, Matt Lench is class and is one of my favourite players but while I agree with you, RR, that Matt has been excellent in pre-season, I think you have forgotten how good Dan Roberts has been in pre-season.

I certainly haven't forgotton 3spirit.

For a young lad still learning and playing for the first time at a higher level Dan Roberts has done well and should be interesting to see how he does when he gets his chance in a competitive league game.

Just hope these ‘fans’ aren’t the type to then ‘brown nose’ these players when put in performances to their satisfaction. I just can’t comprehend how anyone can judge any player so quickly, love to see you them in a similar situation and see how they react to it.

Isn't that the typical 'fickle' supporter Glen?

I don't think Dorking deserved to win. I thought a draw would have been the fair result.

On clear chances created Dorking deserved to win. I thought Briggs looked good first half but didn’t notice him as much in the second. They obviously have experienced quality players and I think they’ll be one of the many play off challengers. I won’t comment on individuals as it’s one game and you can’t judge anyone that soon although a few around me were more than happy to criticise and not support them.

Obviously early days but on that performance I think Dorking look like a team that will finish somewhere between half way and the play-offs.

Why?

I don't think there's any disputing that Dorking had by far the better chances in the first half (I can only think of the one that fell to Ryan Bird for us) and but for Jack Turner and some woeful finishing from Dorking they would have gone in at least 2-0 up.

Second half again I only remember us having the odd half chance and I can't remember the Dorking keeper having to make a save.

Watched the match from the stands with two new Junior season ticket holders. Had a bit of a pre-season feel on a warm early August afternoon.

neither side looked particularly fluent and with players missing from both squads, difficult to make projections on how respective seasons will play out. But we know Slough can and will improve on this performance.

A pity Bird couldn't poke that ball in before half time. Would have been a real boost to his confidence after an unhappy season at Maidenhead. His head didn't drop though and adjusted well when switching to defence at the end of the game.

The goal provides evidence of how silly the offside rule has become in recent years. Ball played forward towards a player in a clear offside position who ran towards it before realising he was off. Flag goes up. Slough players stop. Ref doesn't play blow and Dorking have three vs Jack to win the match. If the flag hasn't gone up the break was still  very much on but there may have been more pressure applied to stop the attack. Key thing is play to the whistle. We didnt, they did.

I thought the away support were a credit to their club. Got behind their team.

Never good to see an ambulance arriving at the ground. Hope the supporter who was taken away is alright.I

What is the link with Steve King and Dorking?

To be fair we are told at referee briefings now that the assistants will not put up a flag unless it is offside, and they feel a player is interfering with play, Sole for them was 4/5 yards off and goes towards the ball (as clearly seen on video) and the assistant puts his flag up, our players stop as we are told if the flag goes up we are told it is off...... the fact the ref overrules the assistant and plays on gives them a clear run on goal and a huge advantage, and whilst they might have still been in if we hadn’t of stopped, it would have by no means been so easy, as Briggs started a few yards behind Dunny.

The facts are the assistant official has a huge impact in it, as if he puts the flag up the ref should give it (as he has believed they have had an advantage).

But let’s be honest this is where the offside rule is still a joke, just so you know the official admitted his mistake in the changing room, and apologised for it, does not get us our point back.

Anyway that is football, and why we love and hate it.

A word for the “supporters” that directed abuse at a few of our players on the first game of the season, support your team and players..... really really poor comments from a minority.

Hollis and Fraser were clearly stepping up to play Sole offside so surely he was interfering with play?

The Ref got it wrong and the lino initially got it right and should have stuck with his first decision.

So I think it was joint cock-up between the pair.
