Slough v Eastleigh (pre-season game)

Exactly, so why say he will be a great asset when he has only had 45 lacklustre minutes in a Slough shirt. For me it's not what he does for other clubs, it's more about what he does for our club.

I am being a bit pernickty in this matter today, as we all favour experienced, exciting, quality footballers in our ranks but as I say I prefer to see for myself how good a player is before I lavish praise onto a player I do not know. Take last night for instance, I was as impressed by our stalwarts Guy Hollis, Wazza, Nis and Matt Lench and our two younger players Francis Amartey and Dan Roberts as much as anyone, so it isn't always about reputable players brought in.

I thought Lenchy was our best player on the night especially in the first half.

Did a bit of a research and he had an initial trial at Northampton Town in April but apparently went back again at the end of June. But I don’t know if he went back to Dorking in between as he has another year of his contract. Seems odd if the trial hasn’t progressed why he wouldn’t have returned to Dorking as he’s still under contract. Considering he was highly rated and played a big part in their promotion you’d think they’d welcome him back with open arms?

There could be all sorts of non-football related reasons...

You could be right Glen but I thought he signed an 18 month contract for Dorking in 2017 and this was up this July but I could be wrong.

Dorking put out a statement, I think on Twitter, saying the Matt Briggs was on trial at Northampton and they would keep supporters informed on how the trial goes.

Matt is no longer under contract at Dorking and is a free agent, he has recently been studying at university of Surrey for last 4 years, and has now finished his studies and is moving to Oxford for a job he starts in August, therefore the travel to Dorking will be too much for him.

He has declined the offer to go into Northampton who wanted him to go in for two weeks after a successful trial in April,  he is very keen to progress in his chosen career which he has studied for the last 4 years.

If/When there is more news we will let you know.

It might seem a bit over the top saying that I think Matt Briggs will be a great asset for Slough based on his reputation but I'd rather be positive and up beat about any potential signing until proven otherwise.

You're obviously entitled to give your opinion 3spirit but personally I'd rather wait a few games (if it ever comes to that) and review my opinion on him then rather than after 45 minutes.

Each to their own. I give my opinion on what I see, that is all.

If we all came on here and agreed with everything, this forum would be as dull as ditchwater.

I'm not judging Matt Briggs on 45 minutes in a friendly. I just mentioned that he looked out of sorts. Certainly no big deal from my angle.

Darren Anderson, who came from Aldershot to Slough, with a glowing reputation played a pre-season and a full season and failed to live up to the hype but in his second season was a revelation and ended up captaining the Slough team, so I'm not one for writing any player off. However, I'm not going to give false praise to a player, just because of his past glories or an inflated ego, when I haven't seen him play [live] for myself.

I would have thought Matt will be given another couple of games to ‘prove himself’ before any type of paper is signed which of course is the correct direction. Plus with Joe Grant impressing in a way those 2 may well be vying for one spot so it’ll be an interesting battle.

3 would be vying for that spot as Warren Harris plays on the right wing, too. Are Matt Briggs and Joe Grant predominantly right wingers?

Don't know about Joe Grant but I think Matt Briggs is predominantly a wide player.

Only guessing but as Matt Briggs didn't sign after the game on Tuesday it looks like a few friendlies before any decision which make perfect sense for both parties.

Joe is predominantly a winger too but I guess like Wazza can play a forward role if required. You can’t give any player whether signed or on trial just one game, let alone 45 minutes to show their worth. I expect decisions will be made towards the last few friendlies. That’s not taking into account that the 3 ‘on trial’ may well have other trials elsewhere.
