Dobbers to daggers! Discuss...

Best of luck to him.

If you were to watch the best highlights of James Dobson then you could be forgiven for thinking he was good enough for the Conference Premier and full-time football....... but having watched him week in and week out for several seasons I think he has weaknesses that frustrate me to the point that and I wouldn’t sign him at that level.

Two out of three managers at that level have rated him and signed him though, and they are much more knowledgable than me.

I think you have to take into consideration the type of game that you ask Dobbo to play. I think he is well worth taking a chance on but for me I wouldn't be asking him to track back and defend,as that isn't where his strength lies. On occasion he can do that but I would focus on his sweet left foot and his ability to get down the wing and cross the ball, and his ability to get into the penalty area and shoot cleanly. Playing in a better team than Slough, he has the opportunity to hone his skills. No criticism of Bakes and Unders but in Slough's game plan, lazy players don't fit in and players have to adapt to the work rate they're asked to do.

Dobbo is a player who will frustrate you in the Slough ethic, Curtis, if you're expecting him to be the all round workhorse. However, in a different team, playing to his strengths and getting him on the ball, you've got a match winner and a player that will create opportunities for others.

What I like best about Dobbo now, is his all round experience has grown and he has matured as a player. He has gone up and down levels/divisions but that hasn't held him back, if anything he has learn't from it.

In my mind he deserves his chance playing higher, and what better manager can he learn his craft from than Peter Taylor, Dagenham's manager. Perfect fit, I would have thought.

What frustrated me was that he would jink his way in to good positions and then not get his head up and cross the ball to anyone specific, he would just hit the ball in blindly... and this was proved on frequent occasions when he did it and the didn’t arrive within 5 yards of anyone in the penalty area.

He’s also a selfish player.... given a choice of shooting from 25 to 30 yards out or putting a team mate in space in on goal, he will always go for the personal glory.

Most of his tweets were about himself not the team.... he just doesn’t come across as a team player.

But if he does start to sort those things out he could do well at Dagenham.

Given that his goal scoring was higher than our forwards, I didn't mind him having a shot rather than passing but I take your point that he could be selfish and not use his brain at times.

I don't know what James Dobson is like off the field. I sat next to his Mum and Dad at a rain soaked Boxing Day game at Beaconsfield and they came across very well and his Dad seemed quite knowledgeable about the non-league scene,so I wouldn't think James is a dumbo. In today's generation there seems a lot of bravado and showing off to look flash,so he may just be having banter of sorts on Twitter with his pals. I don't care about any of that boll**ks, I only care what he can do on a football pitch. As a non-league player,he deserves his chance, as it's not often that a winger scores more goals that the forward line !  Bearing also in mind those spectacular goals of his from free kicks.

Having now had half a season at Sutton, I think the move to Dagenham is a good one,and given he will be under the tutelage of ex Spurs and England winger Peter Taylor, it could be the perfect one for Dobbo to improve his all round game. Funny enough I rate Matt Lench as good as Dobbo, as a player good enough to play higher up but sometimes it seems unfathomable why some players get opportunities to progress and others don't.
