Robbie Johnson's Boots
...my grandad (Bill Lines) played the last of his 4 games for Slough Town. A short career, but an excellent strike record of 4 goals in those 4 games, including 2 in a 4-4 draw with Aylesbury in the same season. One of my favourite sections of our website has always been the player profiles and "on this day" features and without them, I wouldn't have a record of his achievements. Aside from being proud of what he did, and wishing I'd spent more time listening to his stories when he was still around, this discovery has given me an even stronger connection to our club: this is so important to me as, since moving away from my home town, I don't get to as many games as I would like. Irishadrian
I also love this part of the website In today's list on 10th April 1907 we lost 1-2 to Maidenhead Norfolkians but our goal (not a penalty) is scored by keeper Werrell I'd love to see an eyewitness account
Robbie Johnson's Boots
Werrell's record fascinates me! Looks like he played as keeper, left-back and right-back, if the records are right. Scored 7 goals in 257 appearances, some from goalkeeper!
Irishadrian
And back in 1907 they played with much heavier balls! A lot harder for a goalie to score imo

Reading Rebel
Looking at their wiki page, Maidenhead FC and Maidenhead Norfolkians merged in 1919 to become Maidenhead United and changed their colours from Black and Red stripes to Black and White. RJB, according to our 'on his day' in 1926 Bill Lines played for Slough in a 3-0 win against Wealdstone, he was number 10 on the team sheet. Robbie Johnson's Boots
From what I remember of his stories, he played outside right and his mate, Bill Glover (who was my Mum's godfather) always got picked ahead of him in that position. According to the records, Bill Glover played over 300 games. This was also at the time of Ted Norris and Jack Morris, so a lot of competition for places up front! Robbie Johnson's Boots
Thanks, RR. Next challenge is to try and find the match reports in the Observer archives.
Robbie Johnson's Boots
Wow! Found the match report from the Aylesbury game in 1926. Grandad scored 2 in a 4-4 draw and, according to the paper "Lines, apart from his two goals, made a favourable impression". Glowing praise indeed!! Looks like he played at inside right, with his best mate Bill at outside right - like to think of them having a few beers after the game. http://www.sloughhistoryonline.org.uk/asset_arena/image/original/sl/ol/sl-ol-slough_observer12021926223010-e-00-000.jpg?fbclid=IwAR0VvwKWHDrE_G-sYr6Agv-5wmO6k5jPfXRot_ceTjPbXVUWlv_EwmQ8klA
