New web-site layout

I’m pleased to see this as it has been a great part of our web-site.

On numerous occasions people have said to me that their friend, relative or colleague have played for Slough in the past, and it’s always been engaging to be able at the click of a few buttons to pull up the specific details for them.

Also great for keeping track of players achieving landmarks... 100 appearances, 50 goals etc.

Similar with the club database, when people say ‘I think we played Slough once back in the 60’s’.

Totally agree. But as to the last sentence-some of us just have to remember.

  • 1 month later...

Speaking as someone who ran the old RebelsOnline website, I have a few constructive criticisms (both major and minor) regarding the new website:

  • I feel the colour scheme used for the menu at the top (and for the sponsors at the bottom) doesn’t do any favours. The shade of amber doesn’t match the season-ticket promo underneath and it looks garish IMO.
  • The masses of space above and beneath the menu options looks unprofessional. I feel that this has been designed to accommodate the STFC crest, but this leads to wasted space. Eye-catching, but for the wrong reasons.
    • The old menu blended seamlessly into the lead banner whilst still being easily noticeable and accessible
    • The whole website is too narrow (could also be said of the old website).
  • The head story pictures are responsive, but on wide-screens the top of the pictures are cut-off, meaning pictures of players from the neck-down are displayed (see attached files). Looks silly!
  • The next match feature gives the impression that our next match against Eastleigh is in the Vanarama National League South.
    • I personally preferred this feature on the old website, where it was in the main body of the homepage where the opposing team’s badge could be properly displayed and with easy links to our previous match and supporters coach details.
  • I know it’s the close-season, but the On-This-Day feature is currently an empty box, with nothing to indicate what the box is normally used for. I also preferred the old list-format on the old website as it gave more information in less space.
  • On the direction’s pages, the map to Arbour Park and Away Travel don’t work (have tried on different web-browsers and devices).
  • The formatting on the fixture lists I feel is unnecessarily large and clunky, meaning I must scroll down considerably to get through the fixtures!
    • When browsing old seasons match reports, there is no year on the match report so I can’t tell from the report what season I’m looking at.

I can’t be bothered to go through all of Nathan’s points... but surely the vast majority of Slough Town fans and indeed any football fans looking at it, would know the next match v Eastleigh in July would be a friendly and not a league match simply by the fact they’re not in our division and season starts in August? Surely anyone who follows football would know this!!!

Fair play to Nathan for taking the time to give his opinion but perhaps he is being a tad pedantic in some of his comments.

Perhaps as we go along the people who run the site will update and improve it.

And if you're a prospective fan thinking of coming to games? The homepage says we have a home league game on 9th July. Arguably the single most important piece of information is incorrect (or at the very least, misleading).

You can't assume that everyone reading the website is a Slough fan who'll auto-correct these things.

Do you want to check again then Nathan, because I’ve just looked and it doesn’t mention the word League anywhere? Plus as I’ve said any football fan knows the league season starts in August, has done for many decades now. Based on that you can’t say that’s a fault.

It doesn't say it's a friendly either Glen. The Vanarama League logo is directly next to it. What else am I (or anyone else who maybe isn't as clued up on the club and how the fixtures work as we are) supposed to assume?

Again I can’t see this! In the grey box it states the next match is Eastleigh with the date and KO. The league logo is above in the Amber and no way connected to this info! I’m viewing this on my iPhone surely it doesn’t look different on other phones/computers???

Jesus.... you’re nit picking for the sake of it! So it’s gone from saying league to now not saying it? Maybe it was never there only in your mind Nathan? How about making a positive list instead?

That is not what I said. What I DID say was that it gives the impression that it is a league game, due to the the Vanarama logo being directly adjacent to it, with nothing being given to the contrary. The fact that the word LEAGUE isn't there (which appears to be your main gripe with what I said) is irrelevant. In any case that wasn't what I considered to be one of the main criticisms, you've zoomed in on this (as you said you couldn't be bothered with the rest).

I think you're taking this too personally. Are you part of the web team? If so I was only trying to be constructive, in order to highlight what I deemed (as a former webmaster myself) to be areas for improvement, and not just for a moan (honest :) ).

Just seen you other reply, and here is how it appears on my PC.

I’ll leave your below statement to remind you and let you have a think and argument with yourself because I’m not wasting anymore of my time on this...

“The homepage says we have a home league game on 9th July.”

When the forum changed, I wasn't keen on the new layout but have got used to it, and I think much the same about the new Slough club website.

I don't think it is quite as good as the last one but it isn't as awful as some are saying, and as Matt has said it is ' work in progress'.  So I think we  will need to be patient for it to 'work for everybody'.

I just appreciate the efforts of those people ,who update and keep these websites going. Must be very time consuming to do it and people are only trying their best to modernise these sites, so where's the problem?

  • 4 weeks later...

Other than the first pre-season friendly we have against Eastleigh on 9th July which is on the Club web-site banner I haven’t got a clue what or when our other pre-season friendlies are and can’t find them on the Club web-site..... could somebody either provide a link here where they are on the web-site or just list them on a thread please.
