Just to keep you in the loop.

We did indeed put in a 7 day approach for Dan Mason at Sholing after we lost Matty Stevens, as he had greatly impressed us and the players when we played them (big strong and a goal scorer), however with them in the Vase and hopeful of a Wembley appearance it did not happen, within the time scale needed (28 days).

Unfortunatley he is not an option for this season due to the player and what he wants to do for the remainder of the season.

We will review again in the summer.

I believe it was on twitter about there ground being vandalised in the week leading to the defeat in the FA Vase what a real shame there are mindless idiots about who get pleasure in doing this. I hope they have been found and dealt with and that the club get the funds for the repairs. A top club really enjoyed the two games we had against them.

The only problem I can see is  travelling distance.

The problem I see is the enormous difference between Step 5 and Step 2.

From what I recall Lewis Putman was a prolific goal scorer at Step 5 (probably more prolific than Dan Mason) but playing for us at Step 3 scored about a dozen league goals in two seasons.

Lewis Putman is not a great example, as he had bags of potential to be a top striker, when he left Oxhey Jets to join Wealdstone. Unfortunately a bad injury and a long lay off seemed to curtail his goalscoring but I thought Bakes and Unders were right to take a chance on him, when they signed him for Slough.  The trouble was Lewis Putman seemed a pale shadow of his self, to what he had been as a forward before. I watched him in a couple of games for Wealdstone before his injury and he looked class. I also watched him scoring a cracking goal against Steve Bateman's Slough in a friendly and was equally impressed.

His goal scoring record at Slough can not be used to compare against an out an out striker, as for the majority of games Lewis Putman played for Slough, was on the left wing, not as a striker. When he did play up front, at the start of his Slough stint, it became evident that he had lost his confidence playing as a striker but when he was put over on the left wing he excelled in that role and did our team proud for awhile. He eventually lost his place to Dobbo.

I accept that stepping up 3 divisions is a hell of a leap for any player but I don't believe signing players from lower levels should be curtailed, as for me the risk is worth trying, and to me the gamble makes financial sense. I would say Bakes and Unders have been excellent, by and large, at finding players from lower levels to make the grade. However, it's always going to be a matter of trial and error, to find out which ones will make it [or not].

It depends if a step 5 player is given a contract or not. If not then there’s no risk and if it doesn’t work out you part ways. Obviously in demand players like Dan Mason will have a plethora of options this Summer and he could easily demand a contract which then does make it a gamble. Ideally you’d say stay the whole pre season with us and make a decision at the end but I don’t think that’ll be the case with Mason.
