Mickey Lewis

Think Eddie has really pulled one out of the bag for you and it could just be the mid season impetus you need for some success. Quality coach and very, very well respected by players, so if he settles and enjoys it I could see you having a few new ones in due course!

Anyone got any more gen on Mickey Lewis?

I gather he was manager at Oxford United, so isn't a move to being a coach a backward career step? (It is the opposite of the Slough Town pattern, isn't it <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />)

Especially moving from Nat. Div 3 ->Ryman Div 1 S

Why did he leave OUFC?

(Have nothing against him joining the Rebels - just wanted to start a discussion!)

Former Oxford United midfielder and Oxford City assistant-manager Mickey Lewis has been appointed as coach of Ryman League Division One South side Slough Town.

Lewis (pictured), who missed out on the manager's job at Ryman Premier Division side Aylesbury United last season, joined the exodus from City following the resignation of manager Paul Lee last month.

The Oxford University coach will work alongside manager Eddie Denton and his assistant Michael Gilkes, the former Reading winger, at Wexham Park.

Denton, also an ex-Oxford United midfielder, said: "I know Mickey from my Oxford days. Over the years we have kept in contact.

"When I heard he had left City, I thought it was a waste for an excellent coach like him not to be doing something in the game, so we asked him to join us.

"He has a lot of enthusiasm for the game, and I think he can help us a lot, particularly with the defence. Mickey is a good signing for us." [/color]

Thanks, BFR

There is an article in the sport section of 'icBerkshire.co.uk' (who IIRC are related to Slough Express in some way). This article states

Quote:
Manager Eddie Denton felt he needed to share the workload and he got in just in the nick of time to land the former Oxford United manager as his coach as he was about to take another job.

I did think it unlikely that a Third Division manager should be coming to join lowly us, and I wondered if they meant Oxford City instead.

As Denton and Lewis knew each other at Oxford United, they should get on well together here. And as they were both midfield players, they ought to know what our midfield ought to be doing!

This should be good news indeed.

Now all we need is our own ground...

Made my boss happy knowing there is a connection between Slough and Derby, what with him being a rams fan.

I think its a good idea to get somebody else on board because we've seen both Eddie and Michael not be able to turn up for matches this season because of personal commitments, and a coaching staff of two is pretty small. I welcome Mickey to the club and hope he will be an asset. It also wouldn't hurt if he could persuade Julian Dark to come and play for us if we were thinking of going back to three at the back. A very useful sweeper.

Well, I have been banging on for a while that I think the club needed a more experienced head to become involved with the management/coaching side. Hopefully, Mickey is the guy and as the BFR said if he can improve our defence that would be great. Note, that the first game he was involved in we played 4-4-2.
