Slough v Gillingham 2nd December 2018 2pm

The thrill of the FA Cup continues with a Sunday afternoon home match against Gillingham.

Gillingham although three divisions above Slough are going through a difficult patch which has seen them lose their last three league matches, and struggle past Hartlepool (a similar standard to Sutton) in the last round where only a replay and a 96th minute penalty equaliser led to them progressing eventually 4-3 after extra-time..... hopefully they have used up all their FA Cup good fortune.

Their danger man appears to be Tom Eaves, 6’ 5” and the leading goal scorer in League One with 12 goals from 19 matches.

The bookies are quoting odds of:-

Gillingham 4/6 Draw 3/1 and Slough 9/2

In all honesty, although I’m dreaming of a win, my head is telling me the outcome will be similar to the result against Rochdale last season, but I’m hoping we can manage a draw and a live televised replay.

Curtis  Gillingham as you point out have been poor recently but that's also been true all season  Just 5 wins in 19 and it should be to our advantage that they have to play another team in the relegation zone this coming Tuesday Gills are just 4 points from rock bottom and their opponents just 3 points from bottom They will have to give this game their all while we rest  They may have league status but couldn't beat a poorish National league side  Hartlepool on their own ground and although they did win the replay they conceded three  whilst doing it Interestingly very recently Hartlepool were beaten at home by Sutton United and conceded three and we disposed of Sutton which surprised a lot of people who don't know how this squad can raise their game I believe if we play anywhere near our best this season and Gillingham are as poor as they've been most of the season it can be us looking forward to visiting a top team

They are also a team 3 levels above us, we will try and not fall into the same trap that we did against Rochdale, in Tom Eaves they have a top striker who is an absolute handful, and is streets ahead of anything we have faced since we have been at the club.

Lets just make sure that Arbour Park is packed out!

Neil Its a one off cup tie  Most of the pressure will be on the team expected to win I take your point re Tom Eaves but having their league's top scorer hasn't kept them out the relegation end of the table and 20 teams have conceded less goals  We may only have an outside chance but I'm sure it will be closer than the Rochdale game  I totally agree with you that Arbour Park needs to be packed and very vocal Do we know yet how many tickets Gillingham are requesting?

This is probably unlikely / wrong but...

most Gillingham fans think Eaves will leave in January, if he does clubs may be in talks already. They might want him to not be cup tied, so there is a slim chance he won’t get played next weekend.

Again, unlikely but possible.

Gillingham's day so far this season was Saturday 6th. October when they won 0-2 at Fratton Park to inflict the only League One defeat so far this season on Portsmouth.

My first football match was Gillingham 1 Northampton Town 2 on 26th. January 1957 in the Football League Division 3 (South).

Since then I have been to see them on many an occasion although many seasons have been tortuous. They began frequently losing to non-league sides in the FA Cup when they lost at home 1-2 to Folkestone Town before 9,311 in 1965/6. In 1980/1 they drew 0-0 at home to the old Maidstone United when in the Football Conference, drew the replay 0-0 and then lost the second replay at home 0-2. Three matches without scoring against a non-league side from their own county! In 2010/1 they lost 0-2 at home to Dover Athletic completing a 45 years hat-trick of home defeats to Kent
non-league clubs in the FA Cup. Not to mention losing 3-2 at Burscough in 2005/6 and losing twice to Brackley Town in replays after being drawn at home in both 2013/4 and 2016/7.

That should be enough to whet your appetite Neil before I dare mention
Slough Town v Millwall in 1982/3 and Walsall in 2004/5. Time for another big scalp!

If we are going to worry about Tom Eaves there is a solution.

Is there Kirk/MR? well maybe you should come out from the bar and take the team talk and pick the team, as we clearly wouldn’t be thinking about any possible solutions... we just thought we would turn up and have a fun day out.

This made me fully laugh out loud!
