East Thurrock United v Slough Town 25th August 2018

We are back on the road this weekend travelling 70 miles (about an hour and a half journey) around the M25 to play East Thurrock.

The Supporters Coach leaves St Joseph's School at 12.30.... contact details for cost & availability can be found at http://www.sloughtownsupporterstrust.co.uk/away-travel/4587475199

East Thurrock's average home attendances so far this season have been 399, so a good Slough Town supporters following could make it feel like a home match and make a difference.

Although this match may initially look like a bit of a formality, with East Thurrock bottom of the table without a point yet, and us flying high in 9th place with 8 points from our five matches, the table might not actually be telling the whole story because:-

1. East Thurrock's two home losses have been 1-0, to Woking (3rd) & Eastbourne (4th)

2. East Thurrock have only conceded 7 goals in their 5 league matches (unlike Hungerford & Weston who have each conceded 14)

3. We haven't been as prolific at scoring this season, compared with last season, having scored 5 goals in our 5 matches

From this it would appear that East Thurrock might be quite well organised defensively, but they have only scored 1 league goal so far, so appear to be struggling offensively.

I am therefore anticipating this will be a tight match, where we may have to apply a lot of pressure, be very patient (both fans and players), and make the very most of our set pieces.

Forecast result: East Thurrock United 0 Slough Town 1

Bookies odds : Slough 5/4, East Thurrock 15/8, Draw 11/5

I wouldn’t take any game in this league as a formality, that’s asking for trouble!!! Yes they’re pointless but are there game ha e been tight scorelines with Woking scoring in the last moments of their match to win. Also they took nearly 400 to that game hence why ETU average is 399 and not the usual 150 odd home support. I too think it’ll be a narrow win but on the other hand if we create as much as we have done and are clinical it could be more comfortable.

They have also had Sam Higgins the leagues top goal scorer last season missing for the first 5 games, due to getting married.... however think he is back available for them this weekend.

Annoying that their talisman has to come back when we play them! But hopefully he’s still boozed and lived up and has a stinker! No doubt he’s a top player but if we can marshal him then I’m confident of grabbing a win, I see it being a tight game still.

I agree with RR although we are happy with our start we could be doing better if we had put away some chances we would have converted with ease last season I think its still too early to read much into whose hot and whose not with so few games played We certainly owe ETU some payback The last season we had league matches they beat us 0-5 and 4-1 We have a class squad very hard to beat when on top form Let's hope they find that form tomorrow!

Close yet again but ends in defeat this time...

I’m not being negative but i’m starting to get worried about our lack of goals so far, sure we’ll be ok though...

Neil Baker ‘Outside of the first 20 minutes a very poor performance from our lads especially going forward! Defensively sound! Thanks to the travelling fans, and apologies we didn’t give you anything to cheer about today’

Jon Underwood ‘Nothing unlucky about today’s defeat, too many simply weren’t good enough on the day. Disappointed that we let down an excellent travelling support’

I can’t disagree with either of those comments.

I do think this is a very competitive league and matches are won or lost on very tight margins, and personally I think we are going to need to start with our strongest eleven to win matches.... I know we managed to successfully squad rotate last season but that was generally against significantly weaker opposition. And I know some positions are a close call, but I think after six league matches our Managers must know their strongest eleven.

Very disappointed with todays game. Firstly they were bottom for the league for a reason. One of those being ,fortunately for us, 'they could not hit a

barn door with a banjo' very poor in front of goal. Again fortunately for us they had a very over weight striker that did not know where the goal was today.

I disagree with some comments already made, as defensively we were poor and in some instances very poor. Need to say as it is. In midfield, why wasn't

the wasteful passing stopped? Far too many efforts to produce the 'world class' pass which did not work and often put us on the back foot. This was

happening from very early on in the game!

Also, the rotation should now be stopped, the fixtures are far from congested and players are fit enough to deal with one game today, one Monday then

one on Saturday, etc, etc. The time had come to play the best eleven in all league matches. In that eleven there were two defenders on the bench that

should have been playing (in my view).

The last 20 minutes were better after the change was made (another one of the best eleven). Everyone will have their different eleven but the managers

need to pick that eleven and deal with the fall out, which there should be as if any player has anything about them they will not want to be sitting on the bench. The time has come not to please every player as fine margins will win and lose games in this league.

I have watched all of the preseason friendlies and only missed the Gloucester game and the opposition today was the poorest we have come up against overall.

As for the penalty, no question in my mind, as I was right behind the goal.

Make no mistake East Thurrock were very average opposition.

Creativity was in short supply and when some good/half chances did come along we failed to hit the target with their keeper only being tested late on in the game when he made a couple of decent saves with his legs.

Very frustrating game because for the first 30 minutes we were much the better team with some good build up play but our decision making and final ball in the last third of the pitch let us down.

Second half our passing in midfield kept going astray and with Thurrock looking dangerous on the break the sucker punch eventually came and in the end in a game where if we were any near our best we would have won comfortably we came away with nothing.

we seem to do this every year we go to a basement club or they come to us not havig a good start to the season and we gift them their first points of the season , yet we can play better placed teams and come away with the spoils, i know thats football but we seem to do this time after time, i can't figure out if we have a mental problem, or we are just generous.
