v Gloucester City

Reading Rebel

Recommended Posts

We played 4-4-2 with Dunny on the left and Louie on the right.

Thanks Jon.

A well deserved victory by the sound of it.

Reading Rebel has Simon Dunn as man of the match,so he must have done reasonably well on the left !

Agree i thought Scott played well and showed some nice touches and that halfway line lob attempt deserved a goal.

Despite being stood just behind the left stick I hadn't noticed the keeper was so far off his line and as he hit that shot I was cursing to my Mrs something along the lines of "What kind of f**king pass was that, there's nobody there". How wrong was I, marvellous shot and equally great effort by the keeper to tip it over.

An historic game really This is the first ever competitive meeting between the two sides .

As will be the fixtures against Weston-super-Mare and Eastbourne Borough. A good start towards a goal of maximum points against all three.

We have actually played Eastbourne borough 40 times, one of the teams we have played the most in this league. Though the last league match was waaaaaay back in 1965.

But the former Langney Sports FC only adopted the name Eastbourne Borough in 2001. Those previous Corinthian/Athenian League matches were against Eastbourne FC (subsequently Eastbourne Town) who now play in the Southern Combination League. If you don't want to take my word for it ask Keith Hampton (Bernie Gogan) who, like me, will have watched a few of those games.

I was going by what is on the Slough website who have it under Eastbourne Borough, with the same badge (the former Langney fc). And according to Wikipedia (the most reliable source in the world, not) the current Eastbourne borough were formed in 1965 from Langney fc.

The 2001 date for change of name to Eastbourne Borough is confirmed on the club's own website. http://www.ebfc.co.uk/a/club-history-18480.html

I will admit to having a bit of a "thing" about this as in every other respect the historical Information on the Slough website is outstanding and I have the utmost respect and gratitude for whoever spent all that time uploading it. But I have watched games at the Saffrons (Eastbourne/Town), The Oval (Eastbourne United) and Priory Lane (Langney Sports/Eastbourne Borough) and do know the difference.

Confirmed re-the Eastbourne teams, as Dave says I was there way back! Never been to Langney Sports (Eastbourne Borough), but plan to do so in September, especially as it's a new ground to tick off for me. Relatives live down there so know the area a bit and Langney is out to the east of Eastboune.

There is an error in that and also in the Slough Town Opposition Data Base.

Langney Sports FC was founded in 1964 and changed it's name to Eastbourne Borough at the end of the 2000/1 season. Slough Town have never played them under either name and will meet them for the first time ever this season.

The forty matches shown on the Opposition Data Base were in fact all against

Eastbourne Town. Thirty-seven of them in the Corinthian League until it was disbanded at the end of the 1963/4 season and three subsequently in the Athenian League and League Cup.

Played Eastbourne United, F A or Amatuer cup around 69/70 at the oval. Our coach broke en route at West Ewell

Wasn't the best of days apart from the result. I went by train, ambled out to The Oval for the 3pm KO only to find that the match had started at 2.15. The Oval is a sorry sight these days but The Saffrons has been kept smart.

Interesting talking to some GC fans. They would have been very happy with a draw today. They see this league as a series of mini leagues and think they are in the bottom one and need to beat the sides around them 8 teams or so , hope for something when they play someone out of the middle section ( where they put us ! ) and think they will get zilch out of the top set like welling, dartford bilious etc. They say this league has been like that for the last couple of seasons. Not the sort of league where you get Many surprises so important to win the games you should!

Very insightful post,Stan, think the Gloucester fans you spoke to, know their onions.

It is going to be enlightening when Slough face the supposed bigwig teams of the division,to see how we cope with them and if we are good enough to get at them.

I don't read too much into early season form,as the season is always a long one but it is vitally important that Slough get some early season wins under their belt, which I think this side is more than capable of doing.

As the old cliche says  'you have to take one game at a time'.

For Slough, this season is very much like that, in the fact that a lot of teams are new to us and the National League South is a learning curve for our managers.

I'm dividing the season up into three parts, August to the end of October, which I think we will do well up to.

November to the end of January, where I'm expecting us to hit some bumps and stoney ground in which results suffer and re-inforcements are needed, and finally February to May, where we see how far we have come and what we need to do to cement our place in the division.

I don't see our team being relegation material,so the Gloucester fans are right about that IMO but it will very much depend on what injuries we get along the way, as to where our final position actually is.

I think we have played superior football and created more & better goal scoring opportunities than our opponents in both of our last two matches.

If we continue playing the way we have been and finish a few more of our chances (which might just be the fine line of hitting the target rather than the woodwork) then I’m convinced we will win more matches than we lose.

Yes but it is so early in the season that you can't judge anything on three games.

We've played Hampton who have had to rebuild their whole squad for this season. We've played Chippenham, who are likely to have a good season, who have also had a influx of new players and we've played Gloucester, who are one of the fancied sides to be relegated.

We haven't been disgraced by any one of them but who in their right minds thought we would !

Keyboard Warrier get on a coach or train and have a good day out supporting the Rebels instead of summarising on what you expect to happen in the future.

On Saturday I missed the bus in Evesham and ended up in the Pub with the Rebel Supporters you can,t beat it.
