Harrison Gilkes

Health is more important than football, so under the circumstances Harrison is doing the right thing.

I thought he was a class act at Basingstoke fc, and it's a real shame that we Slough fans will never get to see his lightning pace and on the ball wizardry, as a fit Harrison Gilkes would have been a handful for any full back in the Conference South.

Best of luck in whatever you do, Harrison.

Massive shame as thought Harrison could've been very important to us this season once fully fit, just glad he has the listened to his body and the experts, health comes first. Best of Luck Harrison.

Now a question for Bakes and Unders, with Matt Day being released and Harrison Gilkes retiring, is the squad set or will 1 or 2 players now be signed to fill the gaps?

Nobody else to be signed at this stage.

In reality Gilkesy was only with us back end of the season last year having spent periods injured and out on loan, so at that stage was seen as a bonus (and at a good time when we were playing two and three games a week) and we had it in our minds that this season he might need to play for a few months somewhere to get himself up to the rigours of National South football.

Therefore we have only released Matt Lench and Matt Day who were regularly with us, and we have replaced with Louie Soares and Sam Togwell.

That gives us an 18 man squad, and a similar size to what we used most of last season, and one that we are very happy to start with.

You also have to remember we play 4 less league games, come in two rounds later in the trophy and one round later in the FA Cup.

And no league cup.

The current fixture list is not too demanding with mainly only weekend fixtures. As long as there is no injury crisis or squad illness we should be fine as we have been in the past with Neil and Jon.

It is a real shame about Gilkes as he clearly had talent, skill and pace to worry defenders. His decision making at times was questionable but you can put that down to lack of game time, and sometimes you felt he was being greedy because he knew he had to impress to get ahead of Dobson or Harris. He has taken the right decision for him, his own health comes ahead if everything. In any case he still has plenty of years left to change his mind if he wants to in the future.

Thank you Neil, it’s nice to be actually able to communicate with yourself and Jon on here. Allows for decisions to be understood which means frustration doesn’t boil over e.g myself “the keyboard warrior” and Steve Bateman
