Matt Lench leaves

Everyone sees the game differently. I preferred Matt Lench in a attacking centre midfield role and would have picked him for the play-offs.

Anyway he's gone now, perhaps we will be able to pick up one of Wealdstone's  cast offs?

Or Woking's, seems Dowson has got rid of all last seasons squad except 3.

Wealdstone by all accounts had a budget last season that should have got them promoted (reading their forum). Even with a reduction I think it’s safe to say he’d still be offered more than he was on with us. Plus it’s a little closer to his London work and as said Bette chance of promotion. So maybe a ‘no brainer’ on his part? Interesting the clubs’ comment on not offering him terms so does that mean we were going to release him anyway? Can’t be for football reasons maybe off the field?

The managers comment of 'we will not be offering him terms' could be for any number of reasons.

As mentioned we think long and hard before making any big decisions (and there have been a number of them over the last 5 years) and many factors come into play when making them.

The reasons are between ourselves and Lenchy, and that is the way it should be.

As I mentioned we thank him for everything he has achieved with us last season and wish him the best of luck next season apart from 2 games, however we move on, and ask you trust us to make the right decisions for the team and the club, in the same way we have done so ever since we joined Slough.

3 magic goals at Gainsborough.

I could guess at why he is no longer with us but theat would be pure speculation so I wont.

We move on.

More importantly - Neil and Jon who is your new signing to replace him? - dont answer that until all the papers are signed and we are sure he or she (equalities rubbish) is fully on board.

Not really surprised, the times I saw the Rebels this season, Lenchy struck me as a very good player but would be better suited to a free role in a free flowing attack and I'm not sure that's the Rebels game plan, it seemed about hard graft and try to play good attacking football where possible. To me, Scott Davies seems a far better option for the step up with Togwell to start with. I think the Kings Lynn red card was the beginning of the end and maybe the trust for being selected for the big tight games waded a little.

Welcome back,Cookham Rebel [if your are the poster who used to post when Steve Bateman was in charge].

Just welcome, if are not that poster ! :D

I had missed the following in the Slough Express on 27th May which provides a little more detail:-

‘Baker said there were lots of reasons for Lench’s departure but thanked the player for his contribution to a memorable season and wished him all the best for the future.

“Listen, there is no doubting Matt’s ability,” he said. “But sometimes it’s just not the right fit. He was absolutely fine for us last season but going forward he wanted to play in central midfield and we felt that with Scott (Davies), Togs (Togwell) and Dunny (Dunn), we had three who were ahead of him.’

Yes, saw that.

With his close control, passing ability and eye for goal I've always thought Matt Lench was better suited to being in central midfield.

There is no doubt that bringing in Scott Davies and Perry Coles towards the end of the season played a major part in our promotion via the play-offs.

Having said that, for the vast majority of the season Matt Lench was superb for us and arguably our best player.

Scott Davies came in at the right time and was superb but it was only for a short period of time so it'll be interesting to see how he does over a longer period of time.

As supporters we don't get to see what goes on in training and behind the scenes, in terms of players getting on with each other, and who is the managers best trainer and who is not, and who is teachers pet and who is not  etc etc  but what we do see, is in front of us on the pitch, so from that angle given his age, scoring ability, his adaptability and his unheralded work rate and willingness to tackle, I thought he was our best midfield player.

However, Bakes and Unders have made their decision and I think we should move on from it and look forward to the forthcoming season.

As good as Lenchy is, he doesn't make a team.
