Conference South

Bit of a concerning assessment from someone who obviously thinks he has a depth of knowledge of the National South:-

‘Neil Baker’s Rebels may have been one of the quieter sides over the summer, but their two key signings Sam Togwell and Louie Soares both add real ability. I think Slough’s smaller squad may hinder them, but I think they will have enough to finish above some of the league’s weaker sides.’

Followed up with a prediction that we will finish 18th.

I'm sure there are supporters who will accept/hope that he's right which will mean at the very least we will still be in the National South come next season.

I rather hope some of his predictions are accurate I expect us to do much better but his predictions for the final placings of the 7 teams we play in August are 11th 13th 14th 15th 16th Relegated and 5th (Torquay) A goodish start will quickly grow the confidence in the squad regarding the strength/quality of the opposing sides and boost the casual support that follows a successful team.

Curtis - whilst I thought it was an interesting read, putting much if any weight on a report that doesn't even manage to identify that we have joint managers stretches it a bit.

I've been happy to say elsewhere that Slough Town were the side I knew the least about.  I see a lot more Isthmian than Southern League matches, and although I saw the joint managers on Wiki, I wasn't certain what the set up was.

I'll amend though, always happy to take the feedback.

Neil said on Twitter that he thinks pre-season games are boring.

I, as a supporter wouldn't say they are boring, as we fans get to see new players first-hand and can also get to see how our players shape up,when asked to play out of position and can get to witness our team playing in an unfamiliar formation. We also get to play a mixture of teams from different divisions.

One thing I am surprised we haven't tested in pre-season,is the use of a three man centre back line up [possible sweeper],as this may be useful to adopt in a game,if we are under the cosh by one of the better sides.

I know it's not a preferred option of our managers but thought it would be worth seeing in action whatever.

Anyway,I thought that preview by the Cornish chap, seemed a fair assessment.

I'm hoping for a higher place finish than 18th but impossible for me to predict as I haven't seen enough Conference South teams to know.

According to the Hampton and Richmond forum, Bakes and Unders were spotted at their friendly game with Barnet last night.

According to the HR fan who saw them, they would have slept soundly, after watching Hampton's less than ordinary display ! ha ha.

On the official Conference South fans forum, there's an interesting thread titled Predictions, asking fans their opinions on who they think will be the title challengers, who will make the play off's, and who look destined to be relegated and who will be fighting to stay out of it.

Many of the fans participating bring a good overview of the division we are going into.

Most seem to have Billericay,Woking and Chelmsford fighting it out for the title.

With Welling,Torquay, Bath, Hemel, Dartford,Wealdstone seemingly play off favourites.

Hungerford and Truro everyone seems to tip to go down but Gloucester,Hungerford,East Thurrock,Eastbourne and Oxford City also get regularly mentioned.

On Slough Town, one fan has us as dark horses for the play offs, while two other fans have us as definitely relegation material !

Not sure on Truro struggling.

Yes they have lost their home ground but a fair few of their players have to travel to get to Truro so going to Torquay will not make a lot of difference.

Hampton to announce 3 signings tomorrow... How many times has this happened just before we’re due to play someone!!!

Yes, and one of them was chosen in the Vanarama National South team of the season 2017-2018 !

Still, with such late signings they may not gel yet.

Come On You Rebels !

Was that Havant and Waterlooville?

I assumed it was the eleven players chosen from across all the teams in the league. Possibly it could be Rhys Murrell - Williamson, attacking midfielder/winger who played for St Albans last season but I may have barked up the wrong tree. We shall see.
