We swapped Colin Fielder for George Friel at the end of his stint with us. The club actually paid a transfer fee for Fielder, with the money we got for Thommo's transfer to Wycombe.

If memory serves me correct we sold Thommo for £22,000 and bought Colin Fielder for £18,000 from Farnborough. Frankly we were robbed ! !

Thommo was worth double that at the time. I reckon our manager at the time,Alan Davis, must have been on the magic mushrooms when he scouted Colin Fielder, as he was nothing like the player we all had hoped for,as a replacement for our star player, and was very ordinary at best.

But then went on to be a star for Woking.

Some players just don't suit certain teams.

Another player that didn't produce his form from his previous club was Matt Miller. Banged the goals in for Yeading but only scored 19 goals in 105 appearances for us.

Matt Miller was a 'sniffer' in the box and Yeading had some very quick players who would, as far as I'm aware, lay a lot of goals on for Matt.

I think with the Colin Fielder situation,it was that he just wasn't an exciting player to watch like Thommo and I think our manager at the time wanted to change the style of the way Slough played, as we were so dependent on Thommo and really had built our team around him.

The thing is fans love watching attacking football and don't always appreciate changes made but while it is harsh to say Colin Fielder wasn't a good footballer, in my mind he wasn't the player we needed at the time and  we should have been wiser with the money we spent.

First off the club should have looked for a forward replacement quickly, not a centre midfielder/going on defender, as we could have easily found a cheaper one of those, who would have done that job but it's harder to replace goal scorers in a team.

Hindsight a wonderful thing but I thought it then, and I think it now, that we got a bum steer when we sold Thommo and got Colin Fielder.

On Matt Miller, I liked him on and off the pitch. Came across as a very nice guy off the field, while on it you could never level at him that he wasn't a trier.

He also stayed loyal to Slough, when financial issues were thwarting our success. I thought he was better than some gave him credit for. His goal-scoring record doesn't look good, now you've said it, but strikers need good service and at the time we weren't the best for that. I thought the first season he came to us, he looked sharp and was generally an asset. Shame it didn't quite go for him.Glad he came to our club, though.

As you say a very nice chap who was certainly a 100% trier but never got the service from us that he got at Yeading.

This Colin Fielder thing is a strange one and possibly adds weight to the point that some players don't suit certain clubs.

You say he was very ordinary for us which no one can disagree with but I've looked at his record which is impressive for someone who didn't look very good.

In 1982 aged 18 he was signed by a finish side from Aldershot for 3 million.

Then 1 year later Leatherhead signed him from the Finish team for 1 million.

A year later Waterlooville signed him for 1 million.

After that he signed for various clubs for nothing until we sign him from Farnborough for 18k in 1991.

He then signed for Woking for nothing.

Being only 27 when he played for us you couldn't even use the excuse that he was past his sell by date.

Not sure what you've been reading but they were loan moves, certainly not permanent transfers for millions of pounds!

Just for 3Spirit...

Woking Football Club is pleased to announce the signing of attacking midfielder Paul Hodges.

A squad player at best IMO. Can't see him lasting there,to be honest but good luck to the lad.

Last year we scored 111 league goals and conceded 49 goals in 46 matches.

On average the sides finishing in the top seven in the Conference South scored 70 goals and conceded 45 goals in 42 matches.

On the strength of last season do I think we have enough of an attacking threat, not just with our strikers but also our attacking midfielders, to score 70 league goals? Absolutely YES.

Do I think we are strong enough defensively to make the step up a level and still concede little more than an average of a goal per match? NO.

And this is why I think we will be an entertaining side to watch this season, but I don’t think we will finish in the top seven.

With three consecutive clean sheets I might need to re-assess...... what odds are being offered on promotion????
