George was only 19 at the time and the write up states that he received a better offer/deal from Kingstonian.

Now 21 you'd have think that George is a better player now with a further two further years experience under his belt.

Average age of squad is just over 28.

8 over 30, 11 between 25/30 and 2 under 25.

Neil Baker “They are of a good age. I would say the average age is 25, maybe 26 and that suits us down to the ground”

I actually thought it was closer to 29, but maybe we have a few youngsters coming in to reduce the average age!

I suppose it depends on what the club can afford; and the willingness of managers to groom youngsters for the first team. Some managers seem better at it than others.

Alan Dowson is a good one in point, as according to the Hampton forum, Alan Dowson prefers to bring in established players and loan signings, whereas a manager like Gary McCann will take a chance and mould a player, to bring him up to his way.

I'm glad Alan Dowson failed to see George Wells potential,as that has been to Slough's advantage.

I'm hoping Josh Jackman also progresses and hacks it in the Conference South.

I wonder why we don't accomodate a couple of promising 18 year old/s in our squad, to mould into first team players for the future. Would have thought that would be a good, cheap way of bringing them on and they could also be loaned out to gain experience.

In the last decade, we haven't been very good at producing home grown talent In fact we having been very productive in this, in the last thirty years !

Lloyd Owusu, Mo Shariff and Barry Rake come to mind and I was thinking of Anthony Howard, the right back, who sort of established himself at Slough before he went off to Hendon and AFC Wimbledon but bringing young players through doesn't seem to be the club's forte.

Perhaps things will improve in this, now the clubs back on the up.

What I actually said was we had a good proportion of the side that were aged 25/26/27... but mixed in with a bit of experience.

I would say average age will be about the 28 mark.

In my view an interesting interview with the Hampton manager Gary McCann on the Hampton site.

I think he comes across very well, talks about his goalkeeping career and the non league clubs he played for, no mention of the 25 games he played for the Rebels.

Also mentions about a five figure transfer bid he put in for a Hendon player which didn't come off (presumably Nico Muir).

Surprised Hampton could afford to offer a £10,000+ fee unless they’ve received fees for any of their players? Yes it’ll be most likely Muir who joined Hartlepool for £10,000 and obviously there’s no competition between them and Hampton! Be interesting to see how Hampton fare as a big chunk of their play off team have departed, I can’t see them being more than mid table.

Gary McCann seems very down to earth and level headed but I do wonder if he's talking the talk before he's walked the walk, as I thought he was over the top to say to the Hampton fans, that he is aiming at the play offs in his maiden season in the Conference South.

Giving it large before you've kicked a ball in a Conference South match seems absurd.

I'm with Glen on this, I think they will be lucky to finish mid table.

For me it's a difficult one.

Hampton have recruited most of the best of the Hendon squad who only dipped out in the play-offs. They also seem to have recruited some players from last seasons Wealdstone squad either signed or trialing. So they will have a chunk of players who have played together for most of last season but having said that this seasons National South division looks a real toughie so probably mid table is the best they can hope for.

Whether they really believe it or not I think any manager worth his salt should be saying they are aiming for the play-offs.

Gary McCann had to inject some positivity into what has been a pretty downbeat build up to the season so no real surprise in what on the surface does sound like an absurd statement.

I prefer our managers approach, in that they are not making false promises or making wild claims that Slough will make the play offs.

Better to be cautious and optimistic, than over hype proceedings and come unstuck.
