Monday 7th. May : Kings Lynn Town v Slough Town play-off final

Recommended Posts

We were close to him and the "inbred" chanting as needed to make sure my 81 year old Dad was under shade and next to a barrier. That and the aggression of the nearest KL fans wasn't pleasant but nothing could take the gloss off an outstanding day that capped off an outstanding season for the rebels. I have been at all of our promotion achieving games over the years and whilst Bromley away in 1990 was technically to a higher level something about achieving it in a playoff and the tremendous team spirit made it even better.

Clive, I asked that certain white haired idiot quite nicely to stop what he was doing and just get behind his team he told me quite aggressively to F##k off, I told him he was a disgrace !!

Needless to say I never repeated what happened until we were home but I promise you this there is no way I will be selling him a Slough shirt he's not fit to wear it !!!

Technically the Conference was a higher level than what we are going to now, however make no doubts about it, the Conference South is a very similar level to what the Conference was then.

That is now pretty much a full time league, whereas when Slough were in it and I was playing in it you were lucky to get a couple of full time teams.

Football in general gets better because it is such big business and so many kids are pushed these days by parents etc to make it, that there are so many more trying to make it as pros.

Players are generally fitter these days, and with better pitches the higher you go, you are often seeing better football.

Is the Conference South our natural level? Who knows, but we will be giving it a damn good go to try and get to the next level.

Whilst we will have to adapt to new teams, players etc, we have a reasonable idea on the level having watched numerous games over the years.

All I know is it will be exciting, and one we can’t wait to get started in....it has been a target for myself and Unders ever since we started managing together to get to that level, well with that achieved the targets are now set reset and increased.

I agree with you Neil, the growth and quality of the Premier League has forced the whole of the football pyramid down a level.... so the standard of the Conference National is like League Two ten to fifteen years ago, with nearly all full-time teams.

With our current attendances the Conference South does look like our natural level, but if attendances grow to 1,000 we could start looking like one of the big clubs in the league...... and play-off places all the way down to 7th place makes it interesting.

Have always felt the National South was our natural level, but then I would never have said that Bromley, Maidenhead, Boreham Wood, Sutton Utd., Dover, or Solihull Moors were better than National South/North and look what they've achieved. Their support back in the day was never better than ours, in fact one of them still doesn't have support better than us!

I guess that’s Solihull? I’d imagine Boreham Wood isn’t much higher that us and they could be played League 2 football next season! I think our club is in a tremendous position currently and looking forward to what type of player we can attract this summer although I wouldn’t expect more than 4 new players as it’s onky fair we give the squad a chance to prove themselves at this higher level. Hopefully we can also attract more local businesses next season.

Trouble is, Neil, it's like comparing Bobby Moore to Rio Ferdinand.

Yes, players of today are better trained, fitter, educated in what to eat and drink, have in depth coaching etc but players of yesteryear were still the best around at the time and many would have been good enough to make it now, if all things were equal.

I just find there's a lot more bullsh*t around now, than there was in the past !  ha ha ha !.

Two things I agree with you on, though, is the Conference South looks an exciting proposition and Slough Town FC deserve to be in it

For those that want to own a piece of our promotion history.

You can purchase various photos of the day from the link below.

All photos are professionally printed, and sent direct to the address you provide.

There is a "designed" celebration image as well, and that has options of being printed on finer art paper, if you so desire.

For those that feel they need to know, any money I earn from selling these photos will be used to help me continue to be able to afford what I currently provide for every player at every match as part of my unseen continuous sponsorship of the club.

Thank you to anyone, that purchases any of my material
