Longshot

Longshot, I was only 8 in 1971 so only know of a few of them by hearsay.

I was impressed, however, with how much the Wokingham Times cost then, all of 3p. Wow !

Was 19 then and my Dad was heavily involved with Wokingham right through until they folded.  He had hundreds of old programmes, I must sort them out one day.  I will see if I can find some more against Slough.  I love reading about the old teams.

I wonder if anyone on the Forum attended that match.  I may have done but not to sure.

Player manager Alf D'Arcy came from Enfield, followed by several of their players including outstanding goalkeeper Ian Wolstenholme. Keith Mead was a wonderful defender who came from Walton & Hersham. Roger Day attacked an Oxford City player in our 1-0 FA Amateur Cup victory on 13.1.1974. I was sitting in the stand with a neighbour right in front of the incident and literally saw a tooth fly out of the Oxford player's mouth. I remember Tim Turl as well.

I was 16 what a superb Slough side see you have Tim Turl as a striker but turned into a quality full back.

We were 4 nil down v Dagenham in the 1st leg of semi final of FA Trophy but Tim scored one think he got the second as well with-in the first fifteen minutes of the second leg at Wexham Park the fight back was on but the daggers got on top of the game after that and scored twice to win 6-2.

Barry Gaynor in the Wokingham team moved to play for Slough.

Gary Titterton and Ian Bath names ring out to me as Slough players I may be wrong have to look on our players profiles section and check.

What a great team - I started watching Slough with the Amateur Cup semis against Dagenham in 1971 so many of this team are emblazoned on my memory.

So many great players, Ian Reid was a really cultured full back, Keith Mead heading a ball clear with his hair flailing, Alf D'Arcy a great distributor (though I believe Tommy Lawrence was the manager who came from Enfield and brought several players with him), Tim Turl when he was a striker (what a servant to the club he was, although I thought we lost the first leg to the Daggers 3-0 and Roy Davies scored the second in the home leg. Tim's goal from the edge of the box was a cracker though.)

Surprised not to see Geoff Anthony in that team - he was pretty much ever present around then - fantastic down the left wing.

Wokingham 0 Slough Town 2.   Day(pen) Ritchie.   Micky Osullivan wore the 9 shirt and  Tim Turl played right back.

Slough finished champions of the PMFL that season.

Cruise and Ritchie went to arsenal and the player that got punched was from St. Albans and they tried to sue d'arcey

Why would they sue Alf D'Arcy if Roger Day hit them? Tommy Lawrence was the manager

The 1971 game was the semi of the FA Amateur cup game, we drew the first game at Charlton 3-3 and lost the reply, the first game highlights were shown on the big match on ITV.

The game you mentioned re Roy Davies I think was 1976/7 and was the two legged semi of the FA Trophy, we lost the first leg 3 nil at their place and lost at Wexham Park 3-2 , however we had raced in to a 2 nil lead , Timmy Turl scoring a cracker from full back.........memories :-)

I actually think you are confusing two games, the 1971 game was the semi of the FA Amateur cup game, we drew the first game and lost the reply, the first game highlights were shown on the big match on ITV.

The game you mentioned re Roy Davies I am pretty sure was later , I think 1976/7 and was the two legged semi of the FA Trophy, we lost the first leg 3 nil at their place and lost at Wexham Park 3-2 , however we had raced in to a 2 nil lead , Timmy Turl scoring a cracker from full back.........memories :-)

Not confusing 2 games - I was at all 4. There are posts mentioning both ties above that I am responding to.

Just picking up a couple of points. In the first amateur cup semifinal at Charlton a lot of the Rebel fans arrived late on the 30 odd coaches. Dagenham scored a very early goal but Slough recovered to be leading 3-2 only for big Tony Bass to pop up with a very late headed equaliser (sounds familiar?).The replay at Craven Cottage was on the same day as the Boat Race and the race commentator seeing on an arial shot of the race the adjacent football match commented that he did not realise that Fulham were playing at home that day!

Turning to the Roger Day assault case I believe the litigant was a Billy Rafferty. Up until then it was always considered that what occurred on the field of play stayed on the field of play and would be dealt with by the F.A. So this was something of a test case. I cannot remember the outcome but I think Roger Day got off quite lightly although I stand to be corrected. Rose tinted spectacles etc!
