Hereford Game

Ok guys I realise that there was a little too much emotion in my last post.

But the point I was trying to make was that it'll take one almighty effort to win the league from this position, our current form is poor and the battle for the playoffs is now well and truly on.

I really don't see what's so pathetic about saying that.

That first goal was the killer. There was an opportunity to clear our lines but we dallied it on it (I'm an advocate of playing out from the back so won't be too harsh). All of a sudden they got belief and we started to think about there being a whack of injury time still to play.

I was expecting more from Hereford in truth after all that had been said. They just seemed like a limited big physical team. But, fair play to them, they never let their heads drop and stuck in there and showed lots of character.

Inns was my MOM, thought Toggs was good as always, the full-backs both good, Wazza worked his socks off. We didn't hold the ball up too well up front last quarter of the game though. Maybe Manny would have been the better sub over Smart or Wadkins.

Before the game I said to Windsor Rebel that I would take a draw, but now feel that we threw 2 points away.

First half we played ok, but the ref let an awful lot of fouls by Hereford go, and I was glad that he went off and the other official took over and he had a far better performance. (Look that is me praising the second ref!).

The goal from Flood was a very well worked setup and picked our spirits up, with us coming out strong in the second half and bossing the game and getting a second goal we deserved.

However we failed to see out the game by dropping too deep and giving them time on the ball which they quite rightly used and got their rewards.

The lack of game management and naivety showed through again and allowed a good win to be thrown away.

I know people won’t like me saying this but I have had to sit on my hands the last dozen or so games, but now is the time to say it – What is up with Chris Flood?  How did he get man of the match today? He only did one thing and that was the goal, he did not chase balls down, track back, constant off sides.  He is not the player he was earlier in his time at Slough – only 4 goals in the last 13 games, yes others have not been scoring as many, but they are putting in a shift.

On a positive we beat Hereford 3-2 on goals and 4-1 on points over the two games, so we have the bragging rights; it could have been 3-0 on goals and 6-0 on points. That result may come back and haunt us.

What a fantastic game. Not the result I wanted but it was a brilliant example of what football is all about. I thought we were superb at 0-0 up until the refs injury . Really contained a strong and physically massive Hereford side. After the break I thought we took our chance fantastically and we're well worth a lead at half time. Then to come out and go 2 up with george wells ( my mom by miles) amazing cross field ball we had it in the palm of our hands . We made Hereford look ordinary and they never really threatened us . If I was a betting man 3-0 looked more likely than 2-1 .

Then one , two three chances to clear a ball not taken and bamm its 2-1 . At that point I knew they would get an equaliser my only hope was that it would come so late we would at least get a point .

If sport is 75% mental you could see the evidence of that on the last 5 today . A team who keep conceding late goals were trying to defend against a side who just will not lose away ! There was only ever going to be a late goal for them!

Sadly it's what separates the great from the merely good . Hereford will march on and win this league by a country mile because they believe . We will need to toughen up to make the play offs.

Ok I'll put it diplomatically - I feel there is a slim, but IMO now unrealistic chance of us winning the title. I make this calculation based on our present form (not good atm but will turn around at some point, hopefully sooner rather that later), our fixture backlog, our upcoming fixtures (we've still got to play Kings Lynn twice for example), the fact that Hereford have a large squad, more points on the board and, more importantly, momentum (which we don't have atm). Realistically, I feel there is to much to do.

So we are 4th on points per match at present (Hereford clear lead) but really close with Kings Lynn and Kettering. We are definitely not out of the title hunt but it will be tough and take a great run - who thought anything different to be honest? 2nd place is still well and truly up for grabs if we can keep pace with those two and win our match offs with them. We may have to play King's Lynn twice but we have already played Hereford and Kettering twice.

If I was a Slough fan, I would feel robbed, we are not playing our best at the moment, as for a large squad.... we have about 20 first team/ fringe players, loads of injuries (even more after today) but you do have a very good team ...you will be up there at the end of the season. I hope that this is our sticky patch (all teams have one) if not, January could be our undoing. All the best for the rest of the season.

I'm still shellshocked.

Being positive Slough were by far the better team over 90 minutes and deserved to be 2-0 up.

Never thought I'd be agreeing with the Hereford fans but when they sang 'two nil and we fu**ed it up'  you have to concur !

We threw it away in what could have been a famous victory.

I thought we were silly to take off Dobbo and bring on Nathan Smart,as it was an unnecessary change to our team who had looked in control mode up to that point. No blame is attached to Nathan Smart in this regard.

Sorry Bakes and Unders, you both are not deserving of any criticism, and it doesn't need me to rub salt in the wound but it was the catalyst to them pulling two goals back.

Overall, our team did us proud.Thought Alan Inns had his best game in a Slough shirt and was my man of the match but nearly all the Slough players in our team deserved praise for such a great effort.

Inns, Wells, B.Harris and Flood stood out today to me.

Simon Dunn needs a mention, as though he got injured first half, I thought he was looking sharp and it was unfortunate to lose him.

The best stroke of luck we had, was the original referee getting injured ! ha ha ! Not wishing him ill but the linesman come referee of the 2nd half was a big improvement to the first and seemed a lot fairer.

I don't know if Brad Wadkins is still feeling his injury but I was disappointed with his input today. We needed a gut busting, chase every ball substitute appearance but we got a rather laboured half hearted effort which seems out of character of him. Just wondered if he is happy at our club,as it can take time to settle from a rival team to another.

Having watched Brad play for Aylesbury and Chesham in numerous games, I know what an asset he can be both as a forward and as a midfielder, so I just hope it is nothing to worry about with him.

Why do we back off teams and go unnaturally defensive when we get a one nil or two nil cushion?

To me attack is the best form of defence. Attacking wise we ran out of ideas late on.

All in all, though, we can count ourselves bloody unlucky not to have won that game today.

Having just watched the Jon Underwood interview im actually fairly disappointed in the responses given. Yes today was disappointing in the end, yes we should have won the game from 2-0 up into the 90th minute, but if the attitude from here is that we cant win the league with 25 games to play sitting in 6th on 44 points then we certainly wont! Im not expecting the managers to come out and be bouncing around and happy with that point in the end, but the responses given were as if we have lost the game.

There is so much football left to play in the season i would expect some more positivity looking ahead. If this was 5 games from the end of the season and we needed snookers then i could understand it but there is a mile to go yet and i hope that Jon's attitude is just based on the rawness of the result and not the way we as a side are now going to approach the rsst of the season.

There are 75 points left to play for and thus far we have taken 3 points from Weymouth and Tiverton and 4 from Hereford. The only side that has had the jump on us is Kettering thus far.

Im all for being disappointed at a draw from a winning position and super critical of players if they arent doing their jobs or performing but, as i said, i hope the attitude shown in the interview was purely a knee jerk reaction and some positivity can be found moving forwards, otherwise we really dont have a shot at winning the league.

SB, I do feel robbed and I agree I didn't think you were that great, sorry.

Most of us would probably of taken a draw before the game I think if we're honest but hey ho that's football and yes we are a good side after all you havnt beaten us this season lol.

Oh and your No 5 nearly got a bill for taking out his paddy on our seats but apart from that good luck to you as well.

I was agreeing with you Rebel1965 until you said about Chris Flood, while I accept he hasn't been at his best of late, today wasn't one of those games. I thought he was excellent for best part of the game and a handful to the Hereford defenders. He did run out of steam towards the end but that was understandable given the amount he had done overall.

I thought if we were to make a third substitute, it would have been Manny for Chris.

After what can only be described as an excellent performance I should be sitting here wallowing in the 3 points but instead I'm feeling absolutely gutted.

Good first half and we deservedly go into the break 1-0 up from a very good cross into the box, I think from Wazza, and a very well taken goal from Floody.

Second half we were much the better team scoring an absolute blinder of a goal from a throw out by Jack Turner to Wellsy who proceeded to steam down the line and put in a peach of a cross to Ben Harris who tucked the ball away with a terrific header, definitely a contender for goal of the season.

Unfortunately we then proceed to shoot ourselves in the foot with two costly errors. Losing the ball and then giving the ball away in the most dangerous area possible, centrally just in front of our defense, has gifted Hereford a point when they deserved to get nothing from the game.

Although those two errors have cost us there were many very good performances and as such I think we can take a lot of positives from today's game.

Good luck to you if you think we can be champions,we wont even make the

playoff's for some reason we cannot see a game out when in a very good position. And could someone explain why we disrupt the team with changes when those on the park were doing fine.

Kirky old boy, something to do with all three being injured. Is that explanation enough for you?

If your so sure would you also like a wager on us not making the play-offs?

SloughFlyer, I've just seen the Unders interview and can understand why he is peed off and saying what he saying but as you said, it seems more of a knee jerk reaction to a very disappointing outcome..

Tomorrow I'm sure he and Bakes will take stock of this game and put it into some perspective.

The best team I've seen so far this season in the league, other than Slough, is Kettering. I've not seen anyone to fear.  As galling as giving those two late goals away, it hasn't derailed our promotiom push.

I take comfort that Slough outclassed Hereford for best part of the game and we still weren't at our free flowing football best.
