Chesham 1st Jan 2018

An average game with an average result, and too many average performances.

Too many indecisive moves and passes, where an extra touch was taken which took the sting out of the attack.

Not the required performance from a team who supposedly want to win the league or even be in the playoffs.

If the same performance is offered up against Hereford, then we can kiss goodbye to the title.

Time to shake off the Christmas and New Year’s hangovers.

It wasn't a game high in quality, we had the best of the possession but it was pretty even on actual chances created. They missed an absolute sitter in the 1st half. We were moments away from saying good character to grind that one out but alas fine margins.

I thought Wadkins was the pick of our bunch. Given his size and Flood's dip in form I wondered if he would have been better suited to playing as the central striker but he still produced our brightest moments. Thought Webb did well when he came on and Ben Harris was a positive too.

I thought we did well today on what could be best described as a very poor pitch.

We scrapped for every ball and but for a momentary lapse in injury time almost produced the perfect away performance.

Good cameo debut from Ben Harris capped with a very well taken goal from a very good cross.

I though Simon Dunn was excellent today, covering every blade of grass and for me our best player and MOTM by some distance.

How frustrating to have 2 points taken away with just minutes to go... as it’s been said poor pitch and it was never going to be a classic but to have scored late and then concede was absolutely galling. Can’t say any player stood out but thought Ben was lively and put himself about and of course placed his header well. I’d say the Hereford game is now a must not lose and to win will take our best performance of the season, let’s hope we’re all 100% up for it including the fans as they will have 600 backing them.

On the goal we conceded, personally I wouldn't for one moment put any blame on Jack Turner.

It was gutting to concede so late on but we had 3 attempts by one of our players near the half-way line to make a challenge on a Chesham player but didn't which ultimately led to the Chesham goal.

Sorry reading but disagree on your last point. Presume you're referring to Nathan Webb who pushed their player further and further away from our goal. A challenge could have led to a free kick and a heave ho ball pumped into our box. However once the ball was pumped over the top I felt it turned our right back way too easily and then from where I was I felt jack charged out a little rashly. His performances this year have been nothing short of remarkable but I do believe he will feel he could have done better today.

Radders, I don't really want to mention the players name because all players make mistakes but for me the player had 3 goes at the Chesham player to stop him without so much as laying a finger on him and practically 2 touches later the ball was in the net. It's only my opinion but stopping the player even if it was by fouling him and conceding a free kick would have been the common sense and better option so late in the game.

I'm sure Jack will take it on the chin for coming out too early but IMO the move should have been snuffed out before it reached Ravi Shamsi.

Not saying it was but even if Jack was at fault, for me himself and George have been the two most consistent performers so far this season and they’ve certainly gained us far more points than lost.

Agree Glennie, a long way to go but both JT and Wellsy have been superb for us and along with a few others must be at the fore front for player of the season.

Radders is correct in his analysis, last thing we want is to give a free kick away on the half way line so they can load everyone into the box (instead of having 2/3), Webby sent him backwards, and could not do an awful lot more... is one of those things that the lad chested it down to Shamsi so got the wrong side of Smarty, and Jack went to come, stopped, and then went again, by all accounts if he had continued to come he would have won the ball.

It happens, for those that don’t know Jack played today with tonsillitis, flu conditions, and other issues, so massive respect to him, as I can guarantee a lot of people who are not as mentally strong as him would have cried off.

I thought Simon Dunn did okay today but you must have been watching a different game to think he was that good. Agree he did plenty of running but MOTM, really?

I thought our best three players were George Wells, Alan Inns and Lee Togwell. Nis did ok until his rash tackle on the Chesham's number 11, when he rightly got booked.

I hate watching games at Chesham as we never get any luck there.

Wasn't impressed by Chesham at all and it's galling to think we could only achieve a draw there. Pitch was awful but you get that in winter matches on grass and we now have played there enough to know what it will be like.

I don't agree with you, RR,about putting the blame solely on Nathan Webb for their goal. To me he and Ben Harris were excellent when they came on and brought the desired lift to our game, which nudged us in front when we deservedly scored.

I do accept though, that Nathan Webb should have been looking to make a better challenge than he managed with their goal but I would be more questioning of where our right back had gone [Nathan Smart] and why Jack Turner went to ground so early. That said I wouldn't be laying all the blame on them for this draw.

Did our attacking players do enough to win that game? One goal was never going to be enough and while we enjoyed the greater possession, clear cut chances were few and far between. Plenty of huff and puff but I didn't think Flood, Williams or Wadkins did quite enough today for us to win the game.

The free kick scenario is an assumption that they would have scored from it.

I just think being 4/5 minutes into injury time and near the half way line the best way to stop a player from setting up a scoring opportunity would have been to put a tackle in even if it did lead to a free kick.

Of course it's all about opinions but yes I thought Simon Dunn excellent today. His work rate, effort and determination was evident from start to finish, topped off with being given MOTM.

As far as I can see I haven't layed the blame solely on the player concerned. All I am saying is that it would be easy to just blame the defence but as you say a decent challenge wouldn't have been the worst decision.
