When promotion could mean relegation

Apparently there is a Conference League rule every club has to sign up to that stipulates if a club wins promotion to the Football League but does not get promoted because they can’t comply with the Football Leagues rules then they will be relegated to the Conference North or South.

At present, Sutton, Bromley and Maidstone could possibly win promotion from the Conference National, but unless they ripped up their artificial pitches and replaced them with grass then they could be relegated.

As the write up states, with a lot of league 1 and 2 clubs awash with debt, a 3G pitch is the common sense option for a lot of these clubs.

I would agree that to allow a club with a 3G pitch into the football league the surface would have to be of a top rated standard.

As for the Ebbsfleet vice chairman saying that they encourage a more direct and less attractive style of play is talking nonsense.

We'd better change our style of play then! Went to Maidenhead yesterday (after watching our game) and the style of play was pretty poor on a grass pitch. 1200+ punters didn't seem too bothered by the standard of football so maybe Mr. Ebbsfleet has a point.

Not so sure about that Irish, yes if we’re top 5 I’d expect the average to be in the 700’s, but if we’re mid table or below we could see no rise or even a decrease. The teams in the league above bar 4-5 won’t bring significantly more than what we see now and unless we’re winning not sure our support would grow even in a higher league.

The two clubs promoted last season from our league have seen increases in attendance of 46% & 30%.

Our average attendances will increase to well over 700 after our next home match, and will probably average 700 across all our league matches this season. And if promoted I think we could expect at least a 20% increase next season taking us to around an 850 average.

Interesting debate. Back in late 80s and more so early 90s when we first got to the Conference, we averaged 900, with the exception of the big games (Wycombe, Yeovil, Colchester, Barnet league games).

The support for the club is there (look at fans come out of the woodwork when we played H&Y first game at Arbour, Rochdale recently), but the fact remains, a lot of our fans have premiership / championship sides they follow first, Slough second when their team are not playing.

I do know of Slough ST holders who used to watch Premier League side week in week out, but now Slough home and away (down to price and do believe new stadium in Slough is a big factor

I would be worried if we didn't have the interest when the big games came along.

Like with any club, the better you're doing, the more attractive it is to come and watch play.

I do believe that should Slough get to higher leagues, the interest will be there (especially with top professional football pricing fans out).

I wonder if our club has hold of contact information for all (Slough) tickets sold for the Rochdale match? Could be key in future marketing opportunities to promote the clubs’ upcoming matches and news. Also hopeful that once the club takes over the running of the food and beverage operations (I guess this will be in place for the start of next season) this will lead to increased revenue plus maybe additional support if all goes well.
