V Farnborough 26th December

They're all there from Mr Day.

Officiating a fiasco

Should have been 1-1 at half time

Could have gone in at half time 1 up if it weren't for the Ref

5-1 totally flattered Slough and not a true reflection of the game

We didn't really hurt them

They could have got something from today

And today's Spencer Day favourite quote:

Small margins.

I see a career for him as a stand up comic rather than a football coach.

In Bakes post match interview he mentions that Nathan Webb could do with adding goals to his repetoire, among other things, for him to get more game time and so it was fitting that Nathan popped up with a goal against Farnborough, albeit a fluke one.

My thinking is that a lot of it is down to confidence and belief the managers/fans have in a player. Take Simon Dunn as an example, nobody bats an eyelid when Simon takes a shot, whether it's on target, gets blocked or is off target or way off of goal but when Nathan tries his luck, people make out that he shouldn't be doing this, in case he misses, and will give him stick if it fails.

I think we underestimate what we could get from Nathan. I don't believe he will score as many goals as Simon but he might, if he was afforded the chances to do so !.

I like when Nathan pushes forward and plays one twos with our attackers in triangular movement. He makes things happen more than he gets credit for. Take the passes he made to Chris Flood, one of which led to Gavin James goal against Farnborough. He's better going forward than many think.

For me he offers a great deal when Slough are trying to claw a way into a game, like when we played Stratford and needed a goal back. The trouble is,the management and the crowd seem fixated with him doing the donkey work of defensive duties, which we don't seem to expect or ask of Dunny.

I get that Nathan is better defensively than Simon but I think it's unfair not to appreciate what he brings to our play. In other words, invariably he has to do more than his fellow centre midfielders.

I'm happy we have both players in our current squad as they are both good players at this level and to me offer completely contrasting things for our midfield. I compare Matt Lench to Simon Dunn, not Simon Dunn to Nathan Webb.

I just wish that Nathan would get as much slack, as we seem to give to Dunny and Togs.

I believe we could get more out of him than we currently are seeing. Belief and support of him are key to this.

To me, Nathan's game has suffered because of being in and out of the side,as has Guy Hollis, Alan Inns and now, Brad Wadkins is going to need game time to get back on track .

Some players need a run of games to get back to their best, while others seem to be able to pick up where they left off ie Mark Nisbet, Simon Dunn, Nathan Smart Chris Flood. Why this happens, I don't know !

Anyway, just thought I'd put across a different angle for our midfield debate.

3spirit I think our managers have always said that they have faith and belief in Nathan Webb. I don't think Webby has been restricted in going forward otherwise he wouldn't have been encouraged to score more goals by our managers.

IMO because we are particularly strong in midfield with players who are not only more natural goal scorers than Webby but they also do their fair share of defensive duties because of their more natural athleticism/ability to get up and down the pitch.

I think Spencer Day is a great manager, he gave us 6 points.  He knew we are dangerous from set pieces and he failed to defend them.

You have to feel sorry for the Farnborough fans having such a muppet as him as manager, if he just kept his big gob shut he would retain some credability, but he cant help himself with his post match rants, that the whole world hates him and nothing goes his way - we love you Spence - keep on giving us 6 points each season and producing your comedy interviews!

I don't think Spencer Day is a bad manager.

He has had relative success at Farnborough and Chertsey by getting them promoted from their respective leagues, has always been able to recruit well and has been able to unearth a gem or two from lower leagues and youth football, and to his credit his teams endeavour to play good passing football.

He's even put his own money into club's to achieve success [although his actions have been viewed as dubious by many and not been to everyone's taste] .

For a first season in the Southern Premier division I think Farnborough are doing ok-ish.

However, there is no doubt that he is deluded, biased and blinkered when it comes to viewing matches and making his post match comments.

He also seems unable to register that his views can be extremely contrary to what others think and that he has a knack of even upsetting his own team's fans and opposition fans by his outlandish claims and frankly ridiculous statements.

I'm glad he's not manager at Slough !
