Hitchin 1 Saints 0

Recommended Posts

My version of events...

Saints started brightly and looked dangerous down the left flank forcing a couple of corners that came to nothing. Hitchin came back into it more after that, but didn't manage a shot on target during the first half. Wilmot produced three outstanding saves, first from Wraight, then from Edwards who was first to the rebound, and than at the near top corner from an Oakes free kick. Late in the second half new signing Julian Edwards had a golden opportunity to score but lashed it just wide of the post from ten yards.

Richards came on for Edwards at the start of the second half and threatened initially without producing a shot on goal. Hitchin came back into it and for virtually the rest of the half the game was played in the Saints half of the pitch. When the ball was played out either a player was called offside or a pass went astray. One shot of note did strike Wilmot but screwed just wide of the post for a corner and as the game went on it looked increasingly likely that Hitchin would score and they did just that with nine minutes to go. Cogger was brought on for Deacon and showed a good turn of pace down the right wing but it was too little, too late.

Great jubilation at the end and rightly so but this was one we should have won and desperately needed to. A poor show and if we play like that at Sutton we will get slaughtered.

THE END
