v Folkestone Invicta (FA Cup 4th qualifying round)

Reading Rebel

Not a great performance, and individually some uncharacteristically substandard performances from players who looked tired after a very long week..... a fantastic result though, capping an incredible week, and we are in the hat on Monday.

I'm a very happy Rebel this morning.

There was only one important point yesterday and that was we won.

Picking holes in the managers interviews is not constructive.

Yes we can all have our say on this forum, but some people - especially you, just dont know when to shut up.

To be fair I think 3spirit was just passing judgement on a point in the game. Like you say Rebel1965, we can all have our say on this forum.

Who are you to tell someone to shut up too?

Had a good laugh reading the sour grapes on the Folkestone match report.

Apparently Folkestone normally do well on the 3G pitches in the Bostik league but for some reason their players couldn't handle the surface at AP.

Slough players going down far too easily

Because we missed quite a few chances this made the writer wonder how were we top scorers in the league? I think matey that's called football.

As has been mentioned I also don't like seeing the team wasting time at the corner flag or bringing someone on just to do that job when he is quite

capable of putting the ball in the net in normal play (that is how it appeared to me), we should have had the confidence to go at them in the remaining minutes as they were not particularly good on the day.

I would also like to see a free kick given against any team that continues to do that if they waste time at the end of a game. Maybe harsh and some

would say risky but it would keep the game moving and been better for the fans watching yesterday including the many first timers that were there.

So my view - in general I think we should be supportive of the team/management - encouragement usually works better than criticism in getting results.

I think Jon/Neil are the best management team we have had in a long while so I want them to know that's how I feel. There are several things I think they get very right - for example leaving the team to think through how to implement something for themselves, more likely to encourage than criticise from the sidelines, respectfulness shown to opposing teams/management - so I want them to know that. My father and I have made a point of letting them know that both face to cafe and on social media.

I wasn't there yesterday (busy team managing and coaching in my own sport - quite successfully it turned out) but I am delighted by the result and look forward to the first round. It would be great to add a 3rd name to the lost of Millwall and Walsall.

There are things I don't like about the modern game generally and time wasting and, in particular, playing in the corner to use up time, is one of them. I understand that it is a trend that most teams do and it pays dividends, I would just prefer we didn't do it. That said it fits against a general happiness with the style of football we play and delight in the never say die attitude that the team have right now.

As in anything it's a question of balance.

It always cracks me up when people say time wasting is something brought in by the modern game. It has been around for years and years, nothing new.

Matter of opinion I guess - been watching football for 50 years and it definitely seems more prevalent than it used to be. The game has got better in many ways too...players in general are fitter and more skilful, referees protect players better.

It must have barely been happening in the 80's when they brought in a new rule to increase injury time for time wasting.

No need for sarcasm we all support the same team. I just expressed an opinion that I sense a trend that I personally don't like. I was also very positive about our current managers and team.

Of course time-wasting was there in the 80s (and in the 60s when I started watching football.) Our erstwhile captain Roger Day could tie his shoelace with the best of them. It may be a reaction to referees taking it more seriously from time to time (as in the example you give) that leads to practice like holding the ball in the corner which are not against the rules, but, in my view, against the spirit of the game. I accept I'm old fashioned - my son regularly tells me so - but it's just my view....yours is just as valid.

Bit surprised that all the talking is about the time wasting in the corner, after what the team has achieved in the last week, pretty sensational stuff to be honest.

Someone mentioned rotation, then yes has not been so much in last few games, but players have also been left out due to missing games for holiday/weddings, we will not always rotate, and will do when we feel it is right.

There will be changes Tuesday for sure, as we did look a bit leggy and we have so many games coming up, we have a plan in mind for at least the next five games, and if we don't get injuries everyone will be getting plenty of minutes.

With respect to the time wasting, it is called managing the game, and whilst not brilliant to watch, the stakes are so high for players and managers, so when the ball is stuck in the corner the other team can't score, funnily enough I was talking with Kev about this today, and time wasting has always been a thing, and used to be a lot worse, as if you remember that was why they brought the pass back rule in, as teams used to just roll the ball out to a defender who would in turn pass it back to the keeper to pick up.

I remember when Farnborough drew with West Ham they were doing it for the majority of the game....

We would get hammered by the fans if we had ended up drawing the game, as we had tried to get another goal instead of killing it and gave the ball back to Folkestone who went up the other end and scored, which could have also cost us 12.5k, so I can guarantee that if we are in the same position again, we will do exactly the same.

Anyway let's forget this and look forward to what could be an epic day tomorrow.

I agree there has always been ways to run down the clock and everyone uses them as required but if you consider some teams we have played against in comparison we don't do it as much, or that's my opinion.

Let's move on and talk about the team and how well we've been doing instead.

I can't wait for the draw, I'd go with a home draw against any top side, televised, and a win ?

Looking for being in the third round draw whilst being top of the league.

Hi Neil

Thanks for the post as always - really appreciate you getting involved. Not sure "all the talk" has been about that. Even my post, where I admit that it's not an aspect of the game I like, majors on being delighted in the results, thinking we have the best management team for a long time, the need for encouragement not criticism. Hopefully you picked up on that too.

Anyway, as you say, on to the draw....we'll all be tuned in for that tonight.
