Farnborough away 28th August

GH photos strongly indicate that the ball was over the line as by taking into account the parallax this shows that Cureton's clearing foot and the ball are behind the post. The Assistant referee was well positioned to be able to make his decision. Day's comments regarding 20 players are laughable. I was sat in the small stand to the left of the supporters behind the goal and in line with the edge of the penalty area. When the Farnborough no. 2 fouled Gav James I initially thought the offence was in the penalty area but fair play to the referee GH photos show that he got the positioning of the offence spot on. The red card decision was totally right and I am bemused by Day's claims as to covering players. With regards to the trip to Merthyr 48 (not 36 hours) before quite simply tough titty. Slough have to go there mid week this season - part and parcel of being in the Southern Premier. Slough clearly slowed down a bit in the 2nd half for reasons discussed elsewhere but congratulations on a good if nail biting success. Looking forward to the Berko game. COYR!

Glen - have a look at the score board, thats the only evidence needed.

I have just listened to Spencer Days opinions in his interview and whilst i agree woth 3spirit in that he'll stand up for his players, he really doesnt cover himself in glory with the types of comments he made:

- whilst im being a bit "silly" with my comments about the scoreboard, for him say from the Farnborough video that the ball was not over line with that levek of certainty is ridiculous and makes all other comments he makes about our 2nd goal null and void IMO.

- the sending off for his lad in real time looked nailed on, i will however be interested to see some highlights to see about the covering players he mentions as it looked to me as if Gav James was past the last man and the guy grabbed him and tripped him, thus, off he goes.

- his moaning about a trip to Wales is silly as this obviously hasnt come as a surprise to him so should have prepared accordingly as the manager. To that end and...

- complaints about injuries and suspensions alomg with the above shows poor management from him.

- as for him asking "who is he to make that decision in the 92nd minute" towards the linesman really isnt smart at all and if / when the league see that, they really should take some action. The only way he could question the linesman with that amount of strength and conviction would be if he had 100% evidence the ball didnt cross the line, which he doesnt have.

All in all i think he really should have taken sometime before commenting after the game like that as you could see and gear the emotion in his voice, which is understandable, but not a good look as a manager.

"denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick"

Red Card.

The replays and GH photos clearly show the defender makes no attempt to play the ball and deliberately trips Gavin James who is through on goal, it is a very clear red card.

Spencer Day has and will continue to complain about his teams previous red cards but they had no impact on this decision, this referee did not make those decisions and probably doesn't know anything about them. What happens in other games have no relevance to this one.

As for the goal or no goal, there is no clear evidence either way so you have to accept the officials decisions who will have had a split second to decide and whether they are right or wrong you have to remember they are trying their best to be impartial and call the game as they see it. I for one applaud the linesman for having the guts to make the call. How many games do you see the linesmen be impassive and just let the ref make all the calls to avoid being at blame, unlike this linesman who after a long hot day has the guts to make a game changing decision which he full well knows could get him a lot of grief but makes it anyway because he believes it to be the right call. Well done to him !!!

Thanks SJR - looking at that, the Farnborough #6 probably was a "covering" defender, the problem for them is not only was Gav James in a position that probably would have been a goal from him, Warren Harris was standing on his own on the penalty spot. If Gav James gets to the ball and squares it Warren has a tap in, thus a clear goal scoring oportunity on at least 2 counts, thus ref has it spot on.

As sure night follows day we are going to get a controversial decision against us this season, its all part of football the game we all love

The Goal looks to me that its just over the line, But how the assistant could say for sure its in is debatable. Seems like a player is obscuring his view to me. A big call to make,

but I'm sure somewhere during the season the opposite will happen and a big call will go against us.

I think farnborough should feel a little hard done by.

We destroyed them first half and should have gone in 3 or 4 up.

2nd half was a different story and they were all over us. Their number 12 was superb and by far their best player, really changed the game when he came on. Thought the red was maybe a little harsh as there was a covering defender. Despite struggling to hold on to them with ten we nicked a lucky winner, my gut reaction was it wasn't over the line and still not sure on evidence I've seen.

Thought our team selection hindered us first half, both forwards looked shattered and think in hindsight maybe we rested a few too many players to give game time to players who seemed not fully fit. I guess the 2 subs at half time were forced as it left us struggling with only one sub and a number of players who needed a breather. It worked though and we won ugly. (Something we will need to do a lot if we ant to be too 5- something I think we are well capable of this season)

DJD - not sure about the team selection hindering us 1st half. We scored a goal, should have had a pen, had 4 cleared off the line, one hit the bar, a superb save from their keeper and Gav James stuck one over the bar from 2 yards. On another day we could have been 5-0 up at half time. I think it is alomst impossible for us to put a bad 11 out from our squad this season and i love the fact that our managers have put us in that position this season.

Marcus not sure how you could say they were all over us second half?? their first shot on target second half was the goal, and apart from Jack clawing out a cross, they have not got close, the game was pretty dead second half, with no side really controlling the game, and the heat probably had a big impact on that.

There is no doubt we deserved to win the game, yes we have probably won it in a debatable way, but that bit of luck more than makes up for the fact that good goalkeeping, debatable refereeing (penalty first half) and goal line clearances meant we did not go in at half time at least 3 up.

Also it is not a lucky winner (only luck being if the ball didn't go over the line, which nobody can categorically say), it is a corner we work on, and it has paid off again, same with the goal from the first half.

A goal that is only debatable because no one could see if it had crossed the line except the linesman who had the best view. We should have been well clear at half time so one decision that a well placed linesman gave makes Farnborough a little hard done by?

On the red card just ask yourself if the foul stopped Gav from having a shot at goal and scoring? If it did then the red card was not harsh.

Two many changes to keep players happy won't probably work in the long term. And having your best striker on the bench don't seem a good idea to me, I think Mr. Flood should start every league game.

Yes let's play one of strikers every week regardless,t hat won't have an adverse effect!  Having a small squad cost us last year imo and now we have a bigger it has to be rotated. If you play the same 13/14 players and get2/3 injuries, where do you get seamless replacements?

Be interesting to know if those sides above us start the game with their best striker.

They probably do Kirk but possibly because their squad isn't as strong as ours. All 18 (20 if you include Scotty and Harrison) members of our squad would be regulars in 90-95% sides in this league so rotation was and is going to be vital.

Having said that, I was surprised with the way we played our strikers this weekend as my prediction would have been the flood/williams pairing starting yesterday and maybe James/wadkins on Saturday in what I think most would have deemed the slightly easier match.

Anyway, 12 points from 15 and a great comeback from losing on the opening day. Think there's still more to come from us as well; periods against gosport and st Ives and bits and pieces in the first half yesterday showed what we are capable of (wasn't at Hereford) but when we turn that on for a whole game I think we are capable of anything this season!!!

The covering defender only assumed that role because Gav got tripped and pulled back; without that the defender would have been out  of shot and not involved. Also as someone said previously Warren Harris was available for a slip pass if required. So RED card! Agree with the assistant referee being the best placed to adjudge the 2nd goal. COYR!
