St Ives

Recommended Posts

Too comfortable, seemed like a pre-season match at times! The result I expected and we did enough to get the win without over doing it, could have stepped up a few gears if we had to. St. Ives we're poor but these are the games you need to win comfortably which we did. Monday at Farnborough will I'm sure be tougher even though they're not having the best start, hopefully we can take a couple of hundred over and another win would put us possibly in a top 3 position. Well done Rebels!

I thought Bakes was spot on in his summing up of the game in his post match interview.St Ives had played well up and till half time. After the break they may as well have not bothered,as they looked like they had resigned themselves to defeat.

I think our managers should be well satisfied with how the game panned out. You can only beat the team in front of you and Slough comfortably did that today, without really having to work too hard to do it.

The team played some good passing football in parts and all three goals were deserved but as you say GlenSTFC, it did seem like a pre season game.

On St Ives, I think they will be harder to beat at their place and do have a few useful players in their team.

I would have been frustrated if I was their manager today,as it was apparent his players had thrown in the towel when 2-0 down and lacked any belief to get anything from the game, which certainly helped Slough's cause in the second half.

Good to get maximum points, let's hope for the same at Farnborough.

Irishadrian - you got me fair and square, yes it should be fete, however sometimes it feels that way when clubs forget it is the football which people come to see rather than being hijacked for non-football related stuff.

People come to football to get away from the stress and strain of work and the problems in their life and to relax , and then they get accosted by the bucket rattlers and do gooders wanting to invade their free time.

Everywhere you look and go there is someone with their hand out wanting you to donate to this, send 3 pounds a month to that, and it has now got to the stage where the charity business is constantly invading your life - in the high street, on TV, and in your leisure places - football grounds,  Many people have become alienated from giving as it is now just a commercial practice and in some cases the business side is more important than the charitable side.

If I want to give to good causes I will select and donate to them in MY own time - the Mark Scott appeal being one of them, and when I do, I tend to do these things anonymously and generously, for my own good reasons.

Good luck to those who want to raise money for there causes - but please respect my rights and let me watch football and relax.

While I don't agree with everything you say here [there's a surprise, Rebel1965 !]  I do think it's a fair point that you have raised.

I personally think the Supporters Trust and the PALS disability teams are excellent concepts and I also think a few fundraisers through the year ie sponsored walk, barrel roll, Wexham Hospital efforts etc are well worth favouring but I do think the club needs to be careful with overdoing the charity/community efforts as it is becoming over saturated with good causes and too much of it will lead to disaffecting supporters, both the usual and the new.

I noticed in the Slough programme, that Paul Lilywhite's daughter,Rachel, was looking to raise money for a sponsored walk she was doing in aid of Alzheimer's Society, which is laudable and deserves support but should there be all these individual offerings, as where will it lead to, ie, everyone and anyone coming to the club to get sponsors for their chosen cause.

I chose to donate to the Barrel Roll but could have split the money between the both, as had no preference.

I do, however, think it's reasonable to question the worth of being unindated with charity overload.

Like I said before, people can donate to everything, some things or nothing at all.  But the Club/Trust have to do these things (and there are more in the pipeline) as part of the promotional effort that goes into running the Club.

Decent game in general.  It took us a while to get the better of St Ives, but once we did it was more comfortable.  Some great team goals scored, a very professional home performance.

Have to disagree with you Glen that it was comfortable, seemed like a pre season game and that St Ives were a poor team.

The first 30 minutes St Ives looked very lively and had a couple of real good chances and it was only two excellent saves from Jack Turner that stopped St Ives from scoring.

Second half again St Ives started brightly but we gradually got on top and started to dominate and the third goal killed St Ives off.

Some good performances notably from Floody, Nathan Smart and George Wells who had his best game to date for us.

I never felt we were in danger of not winning, yes Jack made 2 great saves but we had the vast majority of possession and some of St. Ives' passing was very poor. I felt had they scored we could always up our game if required. It was right to not go for it and score more with a game on Monday and the need to keep tiredness to a minimum.

After some good build up play the only thing that let St Ives down was their final pass.

I think they will surprise a few teams but will eventually end up about mid table.

Very easy. St Ives were poor. We played very well and dominated throughout. The 3rd goal for me was one of the most superbly worked pieces of play I've seen us do in the last few years. Flood and dobbo were stunningly good today!

Again it's funny how people see things differently watching the same game.

For the first 25/30 minutes it was anything but easy. Both us and St Ives had good chances and as I've said before Jack Turner has made two blinding saves so how was it very easy?

Yes, once we scored and then got the second just before half time it seemed that St Ives became a little demoralized and the game became a lot easier and in general we were much the better team in the second half and really should have scored a few more.

Flood was excellent, the work he put in to get in a position to tee up Dobson for the second, it just didn't seem on. Then lovely skill on the touch line leading to the third, looked like he kept the ball in from where I was standing!

The first 15 mins of the second half, we were relentless but then took our foot of the gas I guess to keep fresh enough for Monday.

Couldn't work out if it was 3 at the back 2nd half, a back four, or flitting between both.

My only grumble is Turner's keepers shirt, too Arsenal for my liking!

The only thing the same is the colours

I thought St Ives were pretty good in the first half personally. We were slow to get going in the heat but scored two goals at good times, and I thought 2-0 was very harsh on St Ives at half time. The second half was ours though and we ended up fully deserved winners without putting in too much effort.

Rr I remember one decent save. I never get the win was in doubt today. Still thought we were dominant throughout. Best chance ms of the first 25/30 were ours with Harris heading wide being the pick of the bunch

You must have popped to the bar DJD, Jack Turner made two top draw saves in the first half as per the videos.

Agree Matt.

First half Slough did well to contain St Ives, and to bag the goals.

Second half Slough won the half by a country mile. The result was never in doubt.

Agree that it will be a very difficult game at St Ives with their pitch etc.

I really don't get some of the comments that it seemed like a pre season game.

Apart from some of the second half for me it was a good hard battle to get the points. Perhaps the sunny weather was something to do with it?

The two "blinding" saves Jack Turner made, one from the free kick which was already going wide and the other coming straight at him you would expect a keeper of his quality to make.

We were in control throughout the match with the first half a case of when we would get our first goal rather than if. Warren Harris should have scored his header in the first few minutes but from then on we were so comfortable and only took us so long to score as we were constantly trying to walk the ball into the net.

3-0 could have been a lot more but we never pushed hard at all. St Ives won't get relegated but certainly won't be troubling anyone for promotion.

I think the pre season comment, was to do with the hot day and that both sides found it hard to get into a real rhythm of fluent football.

Both teams had their moments, Slough in particular put together a couple of good passing moves but neither side could impose any long patterns of dominant play,in fact, the second half I found myself yawning ! ha ha !
