Pick your all time slough town 11

Why don't you start us off,IDJ?

To be honest it's incredibly difficult because of all the different leagues [levels] players have played at ie how can you compare say Neal Stanley at Conference level to say Sammy Winston at Premier division [ before Conference South and North was in existence] or more recent, say Jamie McClurg at Central level to say Paul Barrowcliff, who had played higher level football.

Also many Slough players can be favourites because of their personality or character etc but are not necessarily the best footballers.

I agree with the foregoing comments by 3spirit and Kay. Also 3 spirit has in the past had a jocular comment about "rose tinted " glasses  but here goes anyway - one of my favourite players (who I worked with) was Peter Lowen 1964-65. He scored 56 goals in one season but as Kay and 3 spirit have said how do you compare that era with current times?

OK, this is a very difficult one, but maybe (for some of the newer fans of the club or forum), who would be our most famous 11? As in those that played at the highest level either before or after playing for us.

Would the following be amongst the most famous 11:-

Graham Roberts (Tottenham, Rangers, Chelsea 1980-90)

Kenny Sansom (Arsenal 1980-88)

Eric Young (Wimbledon & Crystal Palace 1987-95)

Micky Droy (Chelsea 1970-84)

Tommy Langley (Chelsea 1974-80)

Brian McDermott (Arsenal 1979-84)

Lloyd Owusu (Sheffield Wednesday & Brentford 1998-2004)

Garath McCleary (Nottingham Forest & Reading 2008-present)

Who else would you add to this list?

You can compare players of years ago to the current ones. If Peter Lowen was playing today he would still be a prolific goal scorer.

Players fitness, being athletes etc moves with the times.

I'm not sure but did Steve Thompson play at the highest level?

He didn't but he could have done, as Ossie Ardiles was so impressed by him ,that he wanted to sign him for WBA.

In Thommo's case, like a lot of the best non-league players of the past, he had a career and was earning a tidy sum from non league football. Taking a risk to play professional league football, was not as lucrative as it is now and back then some non league players were doing better financially than professionals in the lower two divisions.

Back in the day there used to be stories of money back handers, cars being bought for players and even, deposits on houses !

Not saying that involved Steve Thompson but you did get a lot of rumours coming out at clubs who had high roller wheeler dealer types at the helm and think nearly all non league clubs had levels of inducements of one form or another.

So while I understand Curtis's notion of footballers who have played at the highest levels, it is not as cut and dried as it appears.

One other point I think Thommo had been at Bristiol City FC before he went in the RAF as a PE instructor.

Going back to the theme of those who played at the highest level - I think that's fair enough for those such a Gareth McCleary, Micky Droy, Eric Young etc. who were on our books before moving onwards and upwards but not so clear for those who were going backwards and downwards. We have had a good deal of ex-pros who have been great for us (for instance Trevor How, Les Barrett) but equally a few bombers. Anyone remember a certain ex-Spurs player who scored a ridiculous long range own goal at Dagenham. I won't repeat what Trevor Porter shouted out as the ball sailed past him into the net. Or the ex- Notts Forest defender who barely, if at all, touched the ball at Macclesfield in the Conference. So an enjoyable debate and thanks to Idj for starting the thread.
