And when John Doherty left we regressed to such an extent thatwe got relegated at the end of the season.

What I couldn't make out, was why as a club  that season we go and get a quality manager but have such a poor budget for players?

I'm sure John knew that the bubble would burst eventually, with the players we had at that time but he sure did well with limited resources. I would have loved to see what he would have achieved with say Brian McDermott's budget.

Docherty left once he'd got his substantial compensation payment from Bradford City. I think his commute to manage us wasn't from a local aspect either.

I don't think the budget was the reason we were relegated more the appointment of Les Briley as player/manager to succeed Docherty. The following season we came straight back up (albeit at the expense of Enfield) with Dave Russell as manager.

Classic case of not all football players make great football managers but that's the point I was making, John Docherty proved to be a shrewd, wily manager.

Les Briley was chucked into the deep end with no mangerial experience and ended up with egg on his face due to relegation.

This particular season, I thought there was a lot of off field problems, in regards to the club's finances and how the club was being run.

You - Bernie Gogan [or another fan with insider information] may be better informed than me but there seemed animosity and a sort power struggle going on between Alan Thorne,Chairman and owner at the time and his General Manager/ Overseer of the club/friend John Pearson.

Memory may be deceiving me but wasn't it this season, that they parted ways?

Unfortunately Les Briley ended up getting all the blame for Slough's relegation.

There's no getting away from the fact, that Les's results as player manager were abysmal but to me his inexperience as a manager and the stuff he was dealing with behind the scenes was never going to be a  'the marriage made in heaven' for his first appointment as team manager.

He inherited quite a low on talent bunch of players and just didn't have the know how of John Doherty to make

'a silk purse out of a sow's ear'.

As I've mentioned before statistics don't tell the whole story.

3Spirit I think it was BOB Pearson, but definitely agree that he left after some kind of disagreement. I don't really know about behind the scenes stuff, but there's usually something else contributing to poor teamwork on the field of play.

Yes Bob Pearson,sorry.

I believe it was he that brought Slough Town FC to the attention of Alan Thorne.

One thing I think that we have got right under Steve Easterbrook's chairmanship, is making the right appointment and giving the then manager/managers time to build a strong and consistent team.

In the Martyn Deaner/ Roy Merryweather era especially, too often we took the easy option and the cheapest option by appointing players with no mangerial experience whatsoever. I know some of those achieved more than others but rarely does this lead to stability and success.

So Curtis, when you mention how long a period each manager should serve, it very much depends on how the manager is doing, with what resources he's been given.

At the time I thought Steve Bateman was lucky to get his final season with us but I wasn't unhappy with him having one more go at it.

From the outside looking in, I hope Bakes and Unders tenure is a long one. They've yet to have a major stall/crisis in terms of relegation and awful form and even if that were to happen, I wouldn't be in a rush to let them go, as they are good enough to bounce back.

Luckily,me and you, Curtis, don't have to make those big decisions.
