2017-18 Step 7 - Sin Bin Experiment

To be trialed at Step 7 next season

The Football Association has given notice of its intention to trial a system of “temporary dismissals” next season, whereby any player cautioned for dissent will be sent to the “sin-bin” for 10 minutes. The caution administered will still be recorded but the usual £10 fee will not be applied.

The FA has invited applications from Step 7 leagues in the first instance and they have been invited to apply accordingly.

 

At this present time I have not heard as if the SSML have applied and therefore will be looking to adopting this in Division Two next season.

The league would be mad to apply unless they can guarantee 3 officials at Step 7. Would be really difficult for a referee to manage on their own.

 

Although maybe the FA would cover the cost of clocks/timers to be pitchside

Completely agree.

At the weekend, how many games only had one official?

I love the idea though. When teams start conceding with only 10/9 players on the pitch, which could change the game and the fate of many clubs when it comes to league positions, it will get control of the abuse! And more respect will be shown throughout the whole game!

I do like the idea, but would need to understand the potential other rules. Like how many times can a player be sin binned and what happens if you end of with 5 in there so below 7 players, I know unlikely but is possible.

 

Because things like this will impact referee and player behaviours.

Terrible idea. Team with ten men goes on the defensive for ten minutes, ruins the game as a spectacle. And if I'm honest, trial it in the professional game first where discipline is a real problem, not with the clubs that have it hardest already. Typical nonsense from those that govern our game.

seriously? Where do you watch these games. The abuse is awful within the Spartan leagues!

I think that the sin bin approach is a really good concept, but would hate it if officials were sent up shit creek without a paddle! The rules must be clear in order to support referees using the sanction. If there is too much ambiguity, then the use of the sin bin becomes laughable and referees will not feel comfortable.

 

I think that it would work best for second bookings and dissent.

Yellow card or red card is appropriate depending on the offence.  Too many instances the verbal abuse is not punished by a yellow or red.  It would cut down a lot if it was used more.

 

Better still, if the verbal abuse continues, how about moving the free kick 10 more yards towards the fouling team's penalty area.  Keep going if it doesn't stop.

seriously? Where do you watch these games. The abuse is awful within the Spartan leagues!

It's worse in the professional game. You just don't hear it due to the crowd noise. Tends to stand out more when it's done in front of one man and his dog SSMFL crowds.

I was playing in the Herts County League at the time, where it wasn't being trialled. The referee moved it forward 10 yards at which point I said you can't do that at this level and was promptly booked. It was in the days you got a copy of the report needless to say the report was complete fabrication.
