Chesham 17th April

Recommended Posts

No more 2nd chances and hoping for favours we simply must stand up and be counted NOW.

A loss tomorrow could well be catastrophic to our chances of making even 5th so I really hope we can do ourselves justice and produce a performance that shows we deserve a playoff spot.

We all know the players are more than capable of delivering and I am sure the fans will be right behind them but ultimately its the players who have to get the job done and step up a level or 2 from the last few weeks

Unfortunately couldn't make it today but massive congratulations to all for achieving what the vast majority thought would never be on the radar this season. Now let's go all out and give everything including us the fans to make it another memorable season.

Tough day and on the balance of play probably a bit unlucky not to take all 3 points but thats the first objective achieved by getting into the playoffs, just got too see what next Saturday brings and then who and where we have to play.

At the start of the season i think most fans would have snapped your hand off for play offs at the end of the season. Expectations are bound to change throughout the season but all in all, been an excellent year so far. Just got to go on now and win them :)

It has been over 20 years since we have beaten Chesham at their place in the league!!!

We came very close today though. Just like the play off final several years ago we went 1-0 down within a few minutes. After that goal Rowley didn't have too much work to do and we kept them out fairly well and really limited their strikers. We got the equaliser after good work from Gav James down the right who crossed it yo LEM who found himself free on the six yard box to head past our old (!) friend Richard Hayward. We pressed on till the end of the first half and put them under pressure with several corners and denied one or two chances after questionable off side calls.

Second half Chesham started strong but we kept them out. The rest of the half was fairly even and chances few and far between. That said we had two glorious chances to get a winner. The first fell to Gav James who had a tap in at the near post but a late bobble forced his shot over the bar. The second chance came to Hollis with a header from a well hit deep cross from a Dobson free kick, just a few yards out Hollis couldn't get over the ball and his effort narrowly went over and had us all feeling like it wouldn't be our day, that or Hayward had built an invisible wall in front of his goal.

Most of the second half was spent with one eye on the pitch and the other on smart phones waiting for updates from the Leamington vs Banbury game.

There were flash backs to our play off push many years ago away to Romulus when our game finished early and we had what felt like an hour long wait for the final whistle in our rival game to see if we were in the play offs.

We are in the play off, we are in the play offs.

It is looking like 5th place and a kid week trip to Leamington.

My feelings are a bit ambivalent this evening Obviously overjoyed to have secured a playoff place but disappointed not to have beaten at last a poor Chesham side This was Cheshams ninth consecutive winless game and the previous six all straight losses I really thought we would win this one.

Well done Bakes and Unders [and Trent] and all the squad for getting us in the play-offs. It's well deserved as we've been in the top 5 for best part of the season and it would have been an injustice if we had missed out.

Todays effort was much better than what was offered against Cirencester. Mark Nesbitt was my man of the match but I thought Guy Hollis, Gavin James and Simon Dunn also put in notable shifts. All the team did well but we weren't at our most fluent and so there are things to work on for the play offs.

After starting slowly and looking nervy for the first 15 minutes, we then got up to speed and possession wise had the better part of the game. Unlucky not to get the 3 points but didn't quite have enough in front of goal as the game wore on.

For the Redditch game, I hope we go with a very attacking line up,in an effort to liven up our ideas up front. We need to give some of our peripheral squad players a run out if fit ie Gurkan Gokmen, Lewis Putman, Josh Jackman, Calum Bunting and if he's fit Wazza, as today was an example of plenty of endeavour but little in the way of cutting edge.

As we know from experience, play off games are like Cup Finals and so goals will be much needed.

Congratulations to Bakes, Unders and all the players finishing 5th is no mean feat and any fan would have taken that at the start of the season!

It would have been better to get there having won our own matches, but as somebody on another thread said: the season is played over 46 matches, and if we finish 5th we'll have deserved it. It just goes to show how good a season we've had, last 3 weeks aside!

We've completely exceeded expectations, and regardless of what happens in the playoffs, this has been a season to remember and everybody at the club should be proud. COYR

Interesting to see if we settle for 5th place and rest players next Saturday or go all out to win in an attempt to grab 3rd place (although a win could still see us finish 5th!).

Merthyr only need a point against relegated H&Y to stop us from getting a home tie so my preference would be to finish 5th and play Leamington.
