Yellow's Braintree Report

Excuse me if this report is isn't as good as previous ones but I'm suffering the effects of alcohol!

In a rather scrappy first half, Canvey took the lead thanks to a Ty Gooden free kick on the right that was curled into the box and eluded everybody before keeper Rutherford helped the ball into the net.

Midgley and Berquez had further chances to extend the lead before Braintree's Adam Parker was sent off for elbowing Wardy in the face.

In the second half, Canvey raised their game a notch and really started to make their advantage count. A Steve Parmenter header was parried by the keeper but fell to Boylan who gleefully fired home to virtually seal the victory.

Canvey started to play some excellent football and Rutherford had to make two fine stops to deny Berquez.

A superb run and cross from Wardy saw Berquez head over but nearing the end of the match Boylan broke free down the right and crossed for Berquez to fire home through the keeper's legs much to the delight of the travelling yellow army.

A comfortable win against a very poor Braintree side who failed to have a single shot on target. Canvey are now 19 points clear at the top.

Well I've hardly had a drink all day, so I have no such excuse. Anyway, for what it's worth, here's my twopennuth to supplement Yellow's jottings...

With a healthy 19 point lead at the top of the Ryman Premier, the big question now on everybody’s lips must surely be, “Who’s going to come second?” Canvey’s campaign just keeps rolling along and when they are not playing stylish, attractive and open football, they are simply grinding out results.

This game had both styles as it was very much a game of two halves. In the first, Braintree fielded a side that was a subtle blend of youth, experience and sheer brutality. What they lacked in finesse, the made up for with lumping the ball, and their opponents, all over the park.

Braintree had two game plans, number 1 was to hoof the ball upfield as far as they could and when there was nobody to get onto the end of it, they went on to game plan number two, hoof the ball has high as they could. When this didn’t work they reverted to game plan number 1. It was virtually impossible to play any decent sort of football against these tactics and Canvey certainly had their work cut out to make the few openings that they did. In terms of attractive football it was rather dire and several people chose to spend 30 minutes or so in the queue at the burger bar (yes, a burger bar even slower than Basilricay’s!)

Ty Gooden got Canvey off the mark with a well taken free kick that curled beautifully past the Canvey attack, the Braintree defence and, eventually, past the home keeper. It was a just result to be going in at half-time in the lead, even if it was against 10 men when No. 11 sent off, rather harshly, for elbowing Wardy in the face. I saw the Ginger Sex God in the bar after the game and he certainly appears to have bruising and dreadful facial disfigurement that look as if they will take ages to heal.

The second half was much better, mainly because the home side came out and tried to play some football. As a result they gave Canvey some room and they were able to get into their stride. The ever hard-working Lee Boylan was rewarded for his efforts with a great goal on the hour and Ollie Berquez, who had previously squandered several good chances, converted a Boylan cross five minutes from time.

The longer the game went on, the better Canvey looked. At times they were playing exhibition football with Parms (in for the injured Duffy) doing some good work down the left and Neil Midgley gradually finding his form down the right. Braintree chased everything but they couldn’t catch the now buoyant Canvey, floating comfortably at the top of the league.

Good game, if only for the second half. Burger Bar rating – slowest in the league. Clubhouse rating – coldest in the league.

Of course he did. If you asked Greggers he would have said the same thing. If you asked me, I would even claim I scored it. Best evidence is the evidence you see with your own eye.

With my eye I saw, "...a well taken free kick that curled beautifully past the Canvey attack, the Braintree defence and, eventually, past the home keeper."

Write your own report if you want to tell it your way.

Luckily I started queuing for my burger 20 minutes before the match kicked off. The match was about 5 minutes old before I got mine!

A 485 crowd and it takes ages to get a burger! What's it like to see a crowd Braintree!

Well for a team so far clear, you expect everyone to follow them, anyone can follow a winning side, NO OFFENCE MEANT,but will you all be there, when you are struggling next season, doing what Gravesend & Leigh Rmi etc are doing this year.
No, sour grapes congrat's, but Aldershot deserved it last year, Gravesend year before, and now you this time.
See you in conference south, the season after next.

You should of been prepared for the travelling fans then!

As for us following a "winning" team.. Most of the people that go to away games, have been going for ages, even last season when we didnt even win the league!

Think someone's jealous!

Not jealous at all. As I said no offence was meant, if you follow your team. Can you put your hand on your heart and say all those that were there yesterday would be back watching you if you were in our position, you would be attracting the same as us.

I enjoyed reading the remarks about yesterdays game but the one about seeing a crowd, well I thought I should reply.

Good luck.

don't take anything for granted canveyites...

last year we were 18 points behind northwood and only the paint on a post stopped us winning the championship on the last day of the season.....

two games in hand and you to play on the last day equals nine points...

a couple of losses and a few draws.......

and you're ours....ha ha ha..into the lions den you go....

I cant say that no... As when canvey were a "not-so-good" team i had no interest in football as i was then 11-12.. Maybe younger. I had only heard about them through Sky Sports Gillette Soccer Saturday, and from the day I saw they had a team I started watching matches, it's developed since then..

As for UU - Doesn't seem like a "couple" of losses to me and i'm still hesitant that we'll win the league because of past disappointments in the last few seasons. All we can do is watch, and hope.

Going back to yesterday's game despite missing several chances Ollie Berquez had a really good game and looked much better in that position than Junior McDougald.

I thought Parms also did well in place of Duffers. Had a very industrious game.

Wardy was everyway yesterday. Great moment when he pretended to throw a 'paddy' when he was substituted near the end!

I agree with everything said above... Ollie did have a good game, but the game against Basilricay when he came on as a sub, he didnt look too bright, or was it just me?

Parms did great, I wasnt sure how he was going to respond being left out for so long, but had a great game.

Wardy's always a great laugh and has by far the best on-pitch personality out of the whole team. Shame he never usually has the bottle to come down though!
