It was on 7th January 1978 in the third round that Blyth Spartans beat Enfield 1-0 thanks to a Shoulder goal in front of 5,095. Blyth went on to beat Stoke 3-2 and then went out to Wrexham 1-2 after a 1-1 draw (19,935) in the 5th round at St James Park with 42,157 looking on... I have the Match Programme !

I don't remember any other Specials for definite but there was a train trip to Tilbury from Enfield Town in November 71 where the supporters had a whip round for the train driver in a bucket! The Tilbury bucket became a prize trophy for many years....

BTW it was an FAC 4th qualifying round and we won 3-0 - Mr og, John Payne and Joe Adams were our scorers.....

Happy Days

Thanks for that, money is in my pocket.Second question can anybody please tell me of any other games with Enfield that we travelled on a special train from Enfield Chase station in the early eighties.Come on Jim, Medders or Eileen.

I don't remember any special train trips that late; by that time EFC were in the Conference, and through the sponsorship by Sampsons, travelled almost everywhere by coach.

I didn't know about the Tilbury trip that Jim has mentioned, but the other 'specials' that I travelled on include: Peterborough, Eastwood (Nottingham), Alvechurch, Sunderland, Newcastle (for FA Amateur Cup S/F against Blyth, when our train engine caught fire at Chester Le Street, and our crippled train had to be pushedout of the way by the succeeding Flying Scotsman train, whose path we were blocking). There was also a train run from Enfield Town to Wembley for the '68 Amateur Cup Final, and I believe one was run sometime to Bishops Auckland from the Chase.
Hope that helps.

Don't forget the train trips to Barrow in the eighties. Now there hang several tales.....

At the risk of annoying Southport further, I will reply by saying that those trips to Barrow were not with any 'special' trains, just normal service ones. This was mainly due to the relatively poor road between the M6 and Barrow at that time.

One of those trips to Barrow was on a day that BR organised a Teddy Bears Special. Turn up with a Teddy Bear and it was a fiver for any journey in the country.....

How much the wags (as we were known) enjoyed that
