Longshot
I have noticed that teams with artificial surfaces seem to struggle when they play away on a mud heap pitch, (Slough Included). Do you think that this will be a ongoing theme . I can see that it could end up with the grass pitch teams having an advantage in the distant future as players get less games on grassy or muddy pitches which will cause them problems when they end up playing on them only occasionally. You would think there would be a huge advantage for clubs with artificial surfaces but maybe not. Anyone got a view on this.
Windsor Rebel
Good players should be able to play on any surface. Saying that, if you are a good passing side i would say you have a distinct advantage on artificial and good grass pitches
staines_rebel_Jr
2 out of the 3 teams in our league who have artificial pitches are in the play offs!!!
Longshot
Im not saying having an artificial pitch is a bad thing, Im sure its much better, Its when lots of clubs have them there will be less games on mud heaps which when these games are played they will surely favour the sides who reguarly play on them. I may be wrong only time will tell.
staines_rebel_Jr
None of the teams we have played so far who have mud pitches are high up the table, the only team is Frome. Bad pitches will affect both teams as the game can very easily come down to luck. Biggleswade struggled to play much football last night and all three goals came through bits of luck rather than skill.
GlenSTFC
Just worrying we've lost (on paper) quite comfortably against sides with absolutely nowt to play for and noticeably midweek. Hate to be pessimistic but if we don't beat Hitchin I think our chance of top spot may have passed. But we still need to chase 2nd or 3rd for home advantage especially as the first leg will be midweek!
REBEL MATTERS
At the start of the season, we ALL would have snatched your hand off if offered a play off finish (way beyond our expectations). Because of our start, our standards / hopes have changed. I agree, I think 1st position is now out of reach. Some of our midweek losses have been our undoing. Finishing 2nd / 3rd will be big bonus for us if we are to progress in the play offs. Either way, with the stadium / players (and players to come in in the summer), we have a lot to be optimistic for next season (if things dont work out this). GlenSTFC
Yes very true CR but naturally expectations do rise rightly or wrongly. To compete in the PO's is a magnificent achievement (hope I've not jinxed that!!!) and we should definitely see it as a bonus and a dream if we get promotion. If we don't quite go all the way then you'd hope we can keep our best players add more quality where needed and have another real go next seasons playing in an even better stadium with hopefully bigger crowds. Reading Rebel
If we don't get promoted this season and we want to avoid the play-offs next season and actually win the league I think we do have a problem/dilemma. There's no doubt that Bakes and Unders have assembled a very good squad that like to play good attractive football and as such are more suited to playing on good surfaces. Perhaps we should adapt the way we play/team/formation in certain games and become harder to beat on these so called mud heaps. It might not be as attractive but might mean we pick up the extra points that will be necessary to win the league.
REBEL MATTERS
Agreed RR. Think its finding that happy medium in winning games on ugly pitches (well, not to lose anyway) is what we need to add to our game next season. Saying that, this season hasnt been about 'baby' steps, its been gigantic steps (in comparison to previous seasons in the premier league) so maybe has taken management by surprise if they are going to be honest about it. No doubt, consistency is the best its been in quite a few seasons, but we all know how difficult it was for us to get out of that Div 1 league (even before Bakes / Unders joined us). Poole were the same, they were there and there abouts for a few seasons before finally going up. We just need to build (and learn) from this seasons experience, which I am sure we will. Definitely brought some of the old Wexham Park spirit back to the fan base, doubling our attendance average (consistently) since moving back into town (now that is gigantic steps in my opinion).
