if it gives them more room for another article on the only supporter led club to break away from a club in crisis namely afc wimbledon then it is a possibility.

Talking of the FA Cup...Just out of interest, does anyone know the answer to the following?

When the BBC shows non-League clubs in its Match of the Day FA Cup highlights on a Saturday evening (particularly in rounds one and two), why do they always refer to the feeder leagues by their sponsors names (i.e. Ryman, Dr. Martens and Unibond) but only ever use the term "Conference clubs" and never ever refer to Nationwide as the sponsors?

Not a major issue, I know. Just wondered if anyone knows the answer?

On Saturday during the football preview one of the commentators said that it would be some time before there was another giant killing act against the top 3 (Arsenal, man U and Chelsea). He made this comment in the context of the fact that the top three are so far above the rest that they are virtually unbeatable and certainly not be a lower league side.

This set me thinking can anyone recall a giant killing act against a "top three" club in the past.

I looked at the Bournemouth Web Site but could not find a reference to beating MAN U

However, in 1957

"The post war years will be remembered for AFC Bournemouths giant killing FA Cup run of 1957. After beating Burton Albion, Swindon and Accrington Stanley, they were drawn away to Wolves, who were 3rd in the top flight. A 1-0 win saw the Bournemouth earn a home tie against Spurs, who were 2nd in the 1st Division. Bournemouth win 3-1 and then get a home tie against Manchester United - the top side in the country! United won 2-1 in front of a record 28,799 crowd at Dean Court."

Is this what you are referring to?

Any other giant killers against a "top three" club.

When Wimbledon (then of the Southern League) won at Burnley in the third round of 19745-5 season, the Northerners were second at the time in the old First Division. That is quite a shock. Almost as much as Romford of the ESL winning 2-1 in the Cup at Hayes, Second in the Isthmian Premier, during the 94-5 season.

Any more!

The point I am trying to make is that a lower league side defeating a top three club is not a regular event and certainly not something that needs to be called in as support for the notion that somehow football has become more dominated by the top three. (Though that may be the case)

We have, so far, one event nearly 40 years ago and the other nearly 20 years ago.

Who would have thought that Charlton would be fourth or Liverpool foundering in mid table 20 years ago.

All football success is transient and remove Fergusson and Man U may yet go the way of Liverpool.

thought I was goin mad, but

Back in 1984, Harry Redknapp pulled off a shock when his Bournemouth side beat the mighty Manchester United.

Ron Atkinson's United faced the Third Division side at Dean Court and were expected to complete the formalities and safely book their passage through to the Fourth Round. After all, the previous year they had beaten Brighton in a replay to win the trophy for a fifth time.

>>Southport

But were United in the top three at the time.

This giant killing feat does not get a mention on the Man U web site but states,

"United needed a forward who could match the strike rate of Ian Rush at Liverpool, who again won the Championship in 1982, 1983 and 1984. Atkinson’s men were never far behind, finishing third or fourth in every season of his reign. But they were never that close either".
