Sponsored Walk 2017

An update for the walk.

We have arranged for the car park at St Joseph's to be open from 6.45am on the day of the walk so that we can arrange taxis from this central location for anyone who cannot make their own way to Heatherwood hospital.  Taxis will go at 7am and will be available for people who let us know in advance and not if people just turn up.  It will cost around £5-10 per person.

If you've already signed up please speak to one of us by the turnstiles on a home matchday or get in touch to book a place for this.

Today some of our volunteers visited the room which is being developed for the reminiscent room project to meet with staff.

I've also created a sponsored walk page on the Trust website where all the walk information for this year is now kept:

Absolutely gutted to be missing this years walk due to a family wedding having taken part (well, at least started) every previous walk since the Walton one in 2002. :( Hope those giving this one a go have a great time!!!

Don't worry Radders. Your efforts I am sure are well appreciated by everyone. Do you remember the walk to Worthing in 2005 when I picked up a few of you from your overnight digs and got you back to Staines for the League Cup victory against Hampton? I decided it would be a good idea to get a congratulation card for each of you walkers and arranged for them to be signed on the Supporters Coach on the way down. Due to an aberration on my part your card was headed Rodders! Guess I was the fool. Enjoy the wedding and best wishes to everyone taking part this year.

Kay once again as per Radders/Rodders I think you have done plenty in the past - Sutton Coldfield, Dorchester etc. So not a feeble excuse at all. Whilst I'm on just to note to Dan etc. I visited The Alzheimers Society in Maidenhead, gave them a poster and discussed the walk with them. They were really pleased to see what was going on and hopefully will get involved. I will contact them again later and explain about the latest news.

You can now view our Sponsored Walk video on our website.  Thanks to Mike Pearcy for producing it.  Please share it as much as possible on social media to spread the word about the walk.

A Sponsored Walk update with 2 weeks to go including two new photos of the progress being made in the reminiscent room project.

Still plenty of time to sign up or sponsor a walker, or you can donate via the website.

A great cause and good luck to all that take part.

On the room itself, I'm sure once they bring in all the memorabillia and old items in, it will look bygone but at the moment it looks too modern ie radiator cover. mantelpiece, white cupboard.

Did they have radiator covers in the 1950's and 1960's?

I wouldn't have thought so, but then they never had our dreaded modern Health & Safety either.

In this case though, radiator covers are a good safety feature

True. Never thought about that one,HR.

You have to bear in mind that not only do you have to consider that this room will be used for elderly patients with dementia, it all has to be safe and infection control friendly (i.e. easy to wipe down for example and made of the right sort of materials).  You also have to bear in mind that this project is being run by the staff on the ward and at the hospital and using what they can find online and can make themselves (like the fireplace). There are companies that will do these projects for you but I'm guessing it would cost a lot more.

Having worked on film sets and in the construction industry most of my working life I know what it takes to do, ARAAS but you and Horsham Rebel are right, health and safety must come first especially in a hospital environment.

My observation was just how modern the room looked. So far it looks nothing like a room in a 1950's and 1960's house, apart from the clock on the mantelpiece.

You can find our initial list of walkers on the website above.  Please check that you're on our list if you're planning to walk, especially if you require a taxi from St Joseph's School to Heatherwood on the morning of the walk.

Still time to sign up for either the long or short walk!
