St Neots v Slough

Not so long ago St Neots used to bend over backwards to get games on, seems like now old big head Mike Kearns is not in charge they really are a tin pot club.

Yes. Didn't they used to set oil drums alight on their pitch to defrost it ? How times have changed.

I'm told that both teams wanted to play but it was the officials decision to call it off.

I went to get a team sheet at 7.20 and was told that the game was in doubt due to the ref inspecting the goal mouth. This is after they had requested that St Neots repaint some of the lines (which they were doing) and also some doubt over the other end where our players were warming up.

After ten minutes of discussion with the managers the game was called off. I was told to go outside and inform our supporters who were just getting off the coach. Having spoken to Bakes, he said it was the right call.

They refunded the entrance fee without question and invited our fans in to use the facilities.

I'm told that the pitch was fine at 6.15. Don't blame St Neots for this.

Fortunately I had no chance of making this one but I had a funny feeling something like this might happen. It's an expensive business following football, even at this level.

I hope at least those who went by coach will get their money back.

Well maybe just maybe the ref should of looked at the pitch before 15 mins before kick off !!!

Not happy :(

Sue, I'd guess the ref got to the ground way before 7.30?, if he left it til roughly 7.30 to have look at the pitch then I can understand why you're not happy.

Am I'm right in saying all refs walk on the pitch soon after they arrive to check the pitch (especially so in the colder months)? If so then did the temperature suddenly drop in that hour or so to make certain areas unplayable? Can only see it being the refs misjudgment but of course he'll take no blame, hoping he doesn't get paid...

The referees are generally supposed to arrive approximately 90 mins before kick off to do all of their pre match checks; pitch condition and markings, there are enough match balls all pumped up sufficiently and to receive the squad sheets from either team as well as go through a few things with managers and assistant referees (plus probably a few other small things). They also need time themselves to warm up.

It was mentioned earlier that the referee had been there long before 7:30 as he had asked St Neots to re paint some of the pitch markings.

I could be wrong but I think I read somewhere that match officials still get paid half their fee even when the match gets called off. The same applies if a local referee does a mourning check to call the game off early. Someone from the club can confirm if that is true or if I have mixed it up with something else. (wouldn't be surprised if I have got it mixed up though)
