v Chesham

Just been looking back through the league seasons, about the games we have played Chesham FC, on the Slough Town FC website.

Why is it that when we play Chesham, we invariably have one of our better players missing, or that one of our best players in the starting 11 gets injured on the pitch?

Do they have a curse on us?

The forthcoming game we now have Guy Hollis absent, such an important player for us.

You couldn't make it up !

Looking forward to the match regardless. Just hope whoever plays for us, they have the passion and fire in the belly to be up for anything the Chesham team throw at us.

Don't want to see anything malicious or nasty.

Just a good old fashioned derby match played in the right spirit.

It would make New Year 2017 start with a bang, if we can get the better of our rivals.

No airy fairies, more men of steel please ! ha ha ha !

May the best team win [just pray it's us !]. Hate crying into my beer after Chesham games !

Some thoughts for the new year:

There was a time when Non league players became household names because there were so few of them. But the 20 odd players in this years team and those in the Pals team meant that the Slough Town reception at Arbour Park was a crowded and happy event.

Throughout the non league world there were equally joyful celebrations.  Many of this year’s league winners spoke of being inspired by players of previous generations. Inspiration fed their aspiration; and having discovered abilities they scarcely knew they had, these players are now inspiring others.

But to be inspirational you don’t have to score goals or win medals. I often draw strength from meeting ordinary players doing extraordinary things: volunteers, carers, community organizers and good neighbors; unsung heroes whose quiet dedication makes them special.

To mark the return to Slough, volunteers and supporters of the club of which I have been a supporter came to a launch the new ground. Many of these people are modest but inspire me with the work they do.

From giving friendship and support to our players, supporters or the chairman; to championing sport and fitness; providing beer; or cooking burgers, their selfless devotion and generosity of spirit is an example to us all.

When teams face a challenge they sometimes talk about taking a deep breath to find courage or strength. In fact, the word ‘inspire’ literally means ‘to breathe in’. But even with the inspiration of others, it’s understandable that we sometimes think the world’s problems are so big that we can do little to help. On our own, we cannot win games or save goals, but the cumulative impact of thousands of small acts of goodness can be bigger than we imagine.

At the start of the season our attention is drawn to the new and empty table. It was the humblest of beginnings, and the league directors, did not think they were important.

The league directors lived obscurely for most of their life, and never traveled far. They were maligned and rejected by many, though they had done no wrong. And yet, dozens of people now follow their teaching and find in them the guiding light for their lives. I am one of them because Slough Towns example helps me see the value of doing small things with great love, whoever does them and whatever they themselves believe.

The message of the New Year reminds us that inspiration is a gift to be given as well as received, and that love begins small but always grows.

I wish you all a very happy and a points laden New Year.

I would probably feel differently if we were playing at Chesham but I think we should be quietly confident about this one Chesham have an excellent home record but dont perform well on the road 39 points in all just 9 away from home although they have played fewer away than most teams Of course there will be the usual edge and needle when we meet but the strength in depth of this squad means one missing "key"player is not unsurmountable and there is quality thinking in the dugout no more Bateman playing his role as deaf mute and having no idea if or when to play a sub How things have changed!

Fine words but......what has all that got to do with a simple fans forum, that's for ALL Slough Town FC fans to comment on?

On the Chesham FC website, Andy Leese in his preview of the game pays our current team/management a big compliment by saying that Slough ' are very consistent and have a resilence about them this season. We will have to be at our best to get anything from the game'.

Seems a good rallying call to his players, too !

I wonder if he said it through gritted teeth? !

To be honest, Rebel1965, I may have barked up the wrong tree, apologies for that.

Your message might be better under a titled 'Inspiration' thread than under the Chesham game one, as it seems to be addressing different issues.

Simple - you got it!

Thank you.

Simple I may be but least I'm not sanctimonious like you!

I haven't looked but regardless of Chesham's away record for this season I'm sure your remark of being 'quietly confident' is probably taking things too far on the positivity front.

I really don't think Chesham's away record will have any bearing on the outcome of tomorrow's game.

With the squad we have this season I think you're right to certain extent with your quote about 'key players missing not being insurmountable' but with Guy Hollis not available and Dan Hicks missing training yesterday due to illness this has to be an area of concern for us.

Disappointing on so many levels.

Still never seen us beat Chesham

Game of two halves again just reversed from Hayes.

Went to sleep for the short corner then were still sleeping for the second.

Would have been happy with a point today to start a tough January but it just got a whole lot tougher. Think Chesham will be breathing down our neck by the end of the month. By then expect 3 will be in title contention and a further 4 going for the two remaining play off spots.

Shame we faltered in front of a big crowd,

Agree Stan. Was so looking forward to this game, big crowd hoping for a good atmosphere and performance and it just didn't quite materialise. First half was scrappy but we were IMO the better side and I felt we deserved the lead created after great work from Dobbo. I was hoping we could dictate the pace in the second half and build on the lead. But switching off defensively from a corner let them back in.

Chesham are an excellent side and have been for as long as I can remember. Great leaders and experience and they always seem to get one over on us.

Did Dobbo pick up an injury or was the change purely tactical? Was surprised to see him replaced.

Very disappointing I do worry that teams who do not have the luxury of a pitch like ours are able to raise their game and performance when they play at Arbour Park A silver lining today was that Leamington lost Chippenham drew Merthyr froze and Hitchin won and have played 3 more than us Todays game hasnt done a great deal of damage to our strong position imo.

Frustrating in that we have lost a very even contest purely on shutting off for 2 or 3 minutes and paid a huge huge price for it.

IMO a draw would probably have been the fair result. Neither keeper has really made anything but routine saves.

Based on how the game went its a really bad loss made even worse by it being Chesham. In a way its even worse that they didn't totally outplay us like they have often done especially at home in vast majority of recent games with them. It's crazy how bad Slough's record with Chesham has been for the last 10-15 years
