On a pitch that was heavily sanded and very soft, Hornchurch were once again without several key players - George Purcell, Kenzer Lee, Paul Goodacre, Gary Cohen and Abs Seymour - but Elliot Styles was able to take his place in the starting line up after missing a couple of games through injury. Wroxham had strengthened their side with two midweek signings, Callum Robinson and Jack Newman, both of whom had played for Sudbury against Hornchurch in the league cup a week earlier. Hornchurch took control from the start, Leon McKenzie giving Ross Wall a shooting chance, which Robinson saved, turning the ball around the post. A minute later Robinson was again in action, saving well from Jed Chouman, whilst a rapid run down the right wing by Abs Thompson ended with his shot going just over the bar. Hornchurch maintained the pressure, and McKenzie played the ball in to Wall, whose shot deflected off a defender for a corner. Hornchurch took the lead when Junior Luke won the ball close to the half way line and he made ground before crossing to Ross Wall, who turned and fired the ball hard into the net. Hornchurch twice went close from corners, both taken by Chouman, and they appeared to be heading for a comfortable victory - until JJ Da Cruz missed the ball in midfield, and it ran on to Craig Bussens, who gratefully accepted the gift, ran forward and fired his shot past Sam Mott to level the score. Wroxham came more into the match a, and Mott saved from Datacampol, before Hornchurch regained their composure, and Robinson turned a Chouman free kick around the post for a corner. A McKenzie centre was also deflected out for a corner, whilst Junior Luke picked up a booking for dissent. Five minutes from half time JJ Da Cruz gained possession, and he played the ball forward to Wall, who headed on to Leon McKenzie, who immediately placed his shot hard into the net to put Hornchurch back in front. James Morrish replaced Ben Osman for the second half, and Hornchurch had a first minute shock when Tom Rampling fired his cross-cum-shot across the face of the goal. Elliot Styles blocked a well-taken free kick, but it was Hornchurch who had the better of the play. On 63 minutes some good interplay between Ross Wall and Leon McKenzie ended with Leon neatly gliding the ball home for the third goal, and we confidently expected Hornchurch to dominate the remainder of the match. McKenzie almost netted his third with a header from a Chouman free kick, but then the entire pattern of the game changed with Junior Luke’s mistimed tackle in midfield, which led to his second booking of the match, and Hornchurch were a player down for the remainder of the half. Jamie Hursit came on for Thompson, who had on several occasions ploughed through the soft sandy surface on the social club side of the ground, and a minute later Wroxham pulled a goal back when a long ball upfield caught the Hornchurch defence by surprise and Armani Schaar poked the ball past Mott from outside the area. Hornchurch then had to withstand ten minutes of Wroxham dominance, before Morrish almost found the net at the other end with a shot, and Wall made a fifty yard run from the left, which ended with his shot hitting the side netting. A very welcome three points against a club whose position at the foot of the table seems to be a false one, although the two defensive errors which led to both Wroxham goals put the twelve match unbeaten run under some unnecessary pressure. Dagger03
THIS REPORT IS FROM THE WROXHAM FC WEB SITE GOOD PERFORMANCE - SAME OUTCOME Wroxham started a dreary day at Trafford Park knowing they would be without one of their club stalwarts 'keeper Elliot Pride. Having suffered a groin strain he will be out for at least a month. To cover for his absence the Yatchsmen welcomed Callum Robinson in goal, on loan from Sudbury. He started the day alongside fellow Sudbury loanee Jack Newman in midfield. Wroxham lined up with Robinson in goal, Ben Lewis and Tom Rampling the full backs alongside centre halves Ollie Ebbage and Matthew Halliday. Midfield was captain Matt Cook and Newman with Bussen and Schaar on the wings. Datacampol played just behind striker Ross Gilfedder. Up against them was the challenge of AFC Hornchurch - unbeaten in 12 matches and in former Canaries player Leon McKenzie a striker bang in form. The Urchins kicked off and they exerted the early pressure. They forced the first chance when Ben Osman shot from right hand corner of the penalty area, but his shot went just over. Wroxham started to get into the game after early pressure, but they were weary of Bentley and Thompson who really making things happen for Hornchurch down their right. The chances started to come for the Urchins, Robinson looking good on debut to deny Chouman and then Ross Wall as the visitors created the most clear cut opportunities. On 14 mins AFC Hornchurch took the lead. Winger Junior Luke down the left set Ross Wall away down the channel, and he shot across goal to beat the full stretch Robinson. This cheered the very tuneful away support, but also galvanised the Yatchsmen into a response. Jack Newman created the next chance, his inviting cross was met by the stretching Armani Schaar but his brave touch led to the ball going just wide. On 28 minutes Wroxham got the equaliser their committed performance deserved. Schaar again did well to play a ball for Bussens to chase, and this chase was rewarded when a defensive error meant the ball ran through for the winger, who took a touch and slotted home in the bottom left corner. The match was a tough, physical affair, but with great skill too. No more epitomised than by Newman, who earned the first booking of the day for a foul on Chouman. Junior Luke was booked 5 minutes later as the game became a good tussle in midfield. On 42 minutes the Urchins regained the lead. Wroxham had been defending well but the continued pressure eventually led to an error. The reliable Halliday missed a clearance that allowed McKenzie in to finish in the bottom left corner. Wroxham were not deflated by this chance, and by rights should have equalised. Schaar with great work down the left after a corner that was cleared, but Gilfedder put his header just over the bar in the centre of the goal. The Trafford Park faithful knew at the end of the first period that their team had pushed the visitors all the way, but Hornchurch's quality just saw them ahead. At the start of the second half, the Yatchsmen had a great shout for a penalty. Gilfedder went down in the box, but his appeals were dismissed. As the game got stretched Wroxham were right in the game. Although Wroxham had enjoyed more of the play, the Urchins stretched their lead on 64 minutes. A through ball saw young Robinson come haring out of his goal, but McKenzie beat him to the ball to slot into an open goal. On 68 minutes Nyadzayo came on for the hard working Gilfedder and he was straight into the action, as he nearly forced a chance in the box but keeper Mott came to claim. After 78 minutes Junior Luke got his marching orders. A poor challenge on Cook and then some colourful back chat earned him a second yellow, and a chance to get a goof seat in the bar. Wroxham sensed a chance to salvage the game as the Urchins shrank back. A minute later this feeling was increased when the busy Schaar latched onto a long ball to beat the on rushing keeper to it, and touch it past him into the goal. Wroxham bossed the last 15 minutes in what was a real grandstand finish. In the last minute of the match Nyadzayo skill fully got to the byline, but his pull back tantalizingly missed everyone when it was screaming out to be lashed home. So Wroxham finished unlucky again, with a performance that did not match their bottom of the table position. The Urchins went to a lucky 13 unbeaten, and look to have lots of momentum going into the festive period.
