  • 2 weeks later...

Was spoilt for choice today. Within roughly 15 minutes of driving from the Colney derby, the cricket club derby or the Welwyn/Hertford derby, which doesn't seem to have its own name yet.

In the end I plumped for Welwyn/Hertford, as it seemed to be the most important in terms of league position.

A very good crowd in attendance. 374 is the number I believe I heard called out over the tannoy. One of whom was ex-England international David James. And a very large portion of whom, seemed to be travelling Hertford fans, who made all of the noise on the day.

Unfortunately for them, there wasn't much to make noise about. Hertford started very well. Got an early goal after the home keeper seemed to bottle out of a 50/50 challenge after charging out of his area. Leaving an empty net for 0-1

Hertford remained on top for a little longer. Perhaps the first half an hour. Before proceeding to fall asleep for the rest of the game.

Welwyn dominated possession for the remaining 60 minutes without ever really threatening. Hertford still looked dangerous on the counter. And had a few tame efforts on goal.

Then it all seemed wrapped up, when in a rather petulant moment, a Welwyn player slapped the Hertford striker and got himself sent off in the 90th minute.

Welwyn had other ideas though. And bundled in a free kick minutes later to earn a well deserved draw.

I say well deserved, a draw certainly seemed a fair result, but there was some controversy as the scorer seemed to elbow it in whilst laying on the floor.

All in all, fantastic Christmas entertainment for the bargain price of 6 quid.

Stick that up your Premier League football!

I was at Codicote.. Great to see a decent club back home playing in front of 100+ crowd.

Baldock down to 10 men scored a good free kick winner...and also hit post in second half...

Loads of yellows and one red given in a game which wasn't nasty but a good number of competitive challenges went in on a very heavy pitch.

Codicote are a work in progress... need a bit more pace up top and a creative midfielder...

Too many young refs now that have not played the game and do not understand competitive challenges. They love brandishing yellows.

They love brandishing Yellows because they have few, if any, man-management skills, and their 'role models' in the Premier League etc., do it!!

It was an older ref at Codicote.

I had the joys of being in the middle at Codicote yesterday and so can happily confirm that a) I am indeed 'older' :) , B) It was not a nasty game and c) 'brandishing' yellows is not my style and prior to yesterday my average this season was 3 cards per game .....

TCE, didn't state they were not fouls.  A competitive challenge doesn't mean it's now a foul.  Many a game I've been in a charge where it was a clean game, but there will still challenges that were reckless.  Maybe some of them in this game were for persistent infringement?  Please don't blame the ref on everything you read.
