Yellow's Ricay Review

YELLOW

Recommended Posts

A comfortable 3-0 win over a very poor Billericay side gave Canvey a 13 point lead at the top of the Ryman Premier.

Canvey dominated the opening half hour and Ricay keeper Luke Weaver had to turn over a fierce shot from Junior McDougald.

Efforts from Minton and Duffy went wide and it was on 28 minutes when Canvey finally took the lead. A Jeff Minton corner was headed home at the far post by Lee Boylan.

Shortly afterwards a Jeff Minton free kick was handled in the box and Boylan dispatched the resulting penalty with ease. Billericay were creating very little with former Gull Andy Jones having a very quiet game.

2-0 at half time and with Ollie Berquez coming on for the injured Minton, Canvey were looking to cement their lead. Unfortunately the referee ruined the spectacle, calling foul everytime a player fell over. We had several penalty appeals turned down as the second half degenerated into a mundane affair.

Ricay struck the post with an effort but Canvey continued to look lively with Boylan and McDougald a real handful for the ricay centre backs. Neil Midgley who had an excellent game had a shot blocked by a defender, whilst Weaver parried a good effort from Ty Gooden.

It was in the 90th minute that Canvey scored their third. Berquez burst down the right and crossed for Boylan to score with a superb diving header to complete his hat-trick and give Canvey another three points.

Watched by a crowd of over 1,000, Canvey never looked like losing this against a ricay side terribly short on quality.

Now Dave was your review on here before the Official Website's or had you seen their summary before writing your own?

There seems to be an un-canny resemblence on the structure between them!!

What, are you saying my report is rubbish? I'll never speak to you again!

Oh no Dave, I'm saying that either parts of your report have been lifted from here and a few words changed around for the Official Website. OR you have read the summary on the Official Website and have given a much better in-depth review of today's performance!!!

Well I did read the match report before putting this review on here but only to get goal times and the attendance. Now I'm getting worried, the last time we played Maidenhead someone got banned. Oh heck, this is not good!

Oh yeah, I've mentioned this on the ricay forum, but I had to queue 25 minutes to get a burger and when I finally got it, it wasn't very nice!

there always a big Q for a riccay burger, i suppose you can see some of the action from the Q but why bother? havnt you had enough turkey n stuff to keep you going?

good game from the gulls fantastic third goal.. ref had a shocker (from our point of view) in the second half .. read in the riccay program some trip down memory lane where they had duffed us up years ago and the headline in the echo was something about muscle being out done by skill.. well i think thats an apt headline for todays game as well

Alright CANV, noticed you were in the bar today mate.

Ricay certainly like to put it about a bit and there was a couple of tasty challenges. Ref was very poor in the second half. Didn't let the game flow at all.

Well the pint of Tetley's I had was OK, better than that foul tasting one I had at Stortford. Managed to get served 5 minutes before they put the shutters up which was a stroke of luck!

Merv's thoughts on the day

I always think that local derby games are a bit like the Christmas ‘Only Fool And Horses’ Special, For days and days you look forward to it but truth is, come the day, it rarely matches up to expectation. It was certainly true of both events this year. Del, Rodney and Trigger weren’t as funny as I expected while Wardy, Boyly, Mints et al weren’t quite as exciting to watch as I had hoped, even though the 3-0 result was a good one. But hey! Why the whinging? Canvey came home with three valuable points and with other results going their way over the weekend, things are looking very good at the top of the table.

The problem with the game was that although it started very wel,l with so little real or creative opposition from Billericay it was difficult to maintain the momentum and the second half became just a bit turgid. Canvey fans have become used not only to winning, but also to watching exciting games with lots of quality football. It was there in part, but nowhere near the expectation I had built up in my mind over the preceding few days.

Another impression I had of the day; what a sad state Billericay now find themselves in. Ignoring the Basilricay jibes, they were once the pride of Essex football and the team Canvey found so difficult to beat. But just look at them now. The stadium needs an awful lot of work (a car-park for a start), the cabbage-patch pitch needs the care of a skilled groundsman while the team itself needs a lot more imagination and flair than the once talented Andy Jones is able to offer. Many fans seem to have deserted the club and, all in all, circumstances seem to be quite dire at New Lodge.

Perhaps I shouldn’t build my hopes up too much for future local derby games. Just be glad to go along, enjoy a holiday drink and settle for the lads getting a good result. Not so long ago Canvey seemed to either win with flair or perform dreadfully and lose. The difference this term seems to be that when they are not playing tip-top stuff they still get stuck in and grind out a result.

Happy New Year to everyone at the club – pitch, back-room and especially those on the terraces.

agred merv.. the way we attacked the start of the second half without mints looked to me, a team dedicated to one aim.. winning this league.. ok we didnt score the crucial goal to kill it off but you could see what the half time chat was all about.. we all know this team can come back from anything.. ask dover!! but the desire to kill off games n get the three points.. thats championship style..

even with our current lead in the league no true fan even thinks about it being in the bag.. we´ve been here three times too often and no point cushion is big enough untill its in the bag.. come on you yellows, lets get the results we realy want at home against maidenhead and at the ´tree to keep the pressure on the urhins n purfleet
