Frome town manager

Recommended Posts

Nick Bunyard had gone onto social media to announce his permanent retirement from all involvement in football at any level.I agree with David that the FA ban was too little Maybe 5 years A sine die ban would have been pointless since that means " without a day" so could have meant for ever or till next week. There is an oddly ambivalent statement on the Frome site quite supportive of Nick and Critical of the FA.

Whatever sine die means I reiterate that I meant (and should have stated to avoid the semantics) a life ban. And I reiterate my quip "Frome here to eternity". If the FA are serious about stamping out such appalling behaviour then they need to start sorting out appropriate punishments. Some might argue that this could lead to a shortfall of officials but this behaviour needs to be curtailed to avoid continuing poisoning of the game. At least Mr Bunyard has taken the honourable decision in his media statement.

Kay, Dave and Adrian are all right. Sine die literally translated from the Latin is without day. Used commonly in legal terms for an adjournment sine day. Meaning no day is assigned to the matter it remains open indefinitely.

Thanks for the clarification Martin. In the practical football sense given the context sine die can mean for instance conditional on an action e.g. a playing ban until the payment of an outstanding fine or in another context as I intended in my original post - for life. The latter is pointed out by the case of Willie Wooburn of Glasgow Rangers in 1954. He was the subject of an inquiry by the Scottish Football Association for his continual violent behaviour culminating in head butting a Stirling Albion player. The inquiry took just a few minutes and the conclusion was that Mr. Wooburn was banned sine die meaning in this context - for life. Ironically the ban was rescinded 3 years later by which time Wooburn who was 37 decided to formally retire. None of this of course changes the current situation.

He was the last UK footballer (so far) to receive a sine die suspension His sirname was Woodburn and he was the Rangers captain at the time.

Oh no he wasn't.

The bed & Breakfast F A banned me sine die in the early seventies for non payment of a fine(s) for a sending off in a game I did not play in, for a side I did not play for. It was resolved a couple of years later. Never did find out who stitched me up; though my educated guess is it was &%G3(gde%  ( allegedly).

There were other cases like this at the time.

Banny Thanks for that I should have added for violent conduct Your situation is very common and as Rebel Kay posted earlier still current A Player who doesnt pay a fine is suspended until the day he does You were very unlucky if you were not involved in the game

Sine Die is used often in Red Brick Universities for Dons, who are ageing and technically retired meaning they are available if required.

Personally, I think the FA had a typo error.

They meant to type, "SIN, DIE !!"  :bolt:

I'll fetch me coat.
