Dagger03
FROM THE ROMFORD RECORDER - Hornchurch’s youngsters saw their FA Youth Cup run brought to a shuddering halt at stadiummk last night. The young Urchins, members of Barking Abbey’s Academy, had beaten Hullbridge Sports, Tower Hamlets, Tilbury and Rushden & Higham United to reach the first round. And Jayde Abraham forced an early save from Nathan Pickworth, before the hosts countered and captain Hugo Logan saw his intended pass for Brandon Thomas-Asante was blocked. Peter Kioso then saw a right-footed effort locked, before Oran Jackson beat Ibrahim Ugradar with only six minutes gone to open the scoring. Ugradar denied Thomas-Asante a second on 13 minutes, while Solomon Ogunwomoju’s free-kick was collected by Pickworth at the other end. But MK Dons doubled their lead on 21 minutes when Thomas-Asante got a touch on Kioso’s cross and Sam Nombe controlled the ball on his chest before volleying home. Joel Brown-Bampoe curled a shot just wide as Urchins looked for a quick reply, before Thomas-Asante and Kioso were off-target for the hosts. Ugradar saved from Osei-Bonsu at his near post on the half-hour mark and claimed Thomas-Asante’s underhit effort soon after, before Hornchurch’s Sam Mvemba headed wide from a Nathan Douglas cross. The visitors had the woodwork to thank when Finn Tapp’s acrobatic effort bounced off the crossbar, before Ugradar kept out Logan’s attempt. And Dons went close again through Nombe and Osei-Bonsu, before Logan had a shot saved and Joe Evans headed over just before the interval. The second half was only three minutes old when Thomas-Asante surged into the box and was brought down to win his side a clear penalty, which he then converted with a cheeky Panenka-style finish to make it 3-0. But Hornchurch hit back moments later as Warren Kayembe poked home from close range when the home side failed to clear a cross. Dons restored their three-goal cushion just after the hour mark when Logan’s perfect through ball found Thomas-Asante, who lobbed Urgadar from 20 yards. But Kayembe missed a great chance for a second Hornchurch goal, before Thomas-Asante completed his hat-trick in the last minute of normal time with a 20-yard strike. Dons rubbed salt into the wounds in injury time as Osei-Bonsu burst through the Urchins defence to fire home a sixth goal in front of a crowd of 400. Hornchurch: Ugradar, Douglas, Mvemba, Djemali, Ayoola, Sheikh, Abraham, Brown-Bampoe, Ogunwomoju, Kambaza, El Hafidi. Subs: Roland, Ahmed, Kayembe, Obeng-Kouassi, Bromfield. FROM THE MKDONS WEB SITE - MK Dons cruised into the second round of the FA Youth Cup after an excellent performance and result at Stadium MK. A classy hat-trick from rising star Brandon Thomas-Asante played a major part as Edu Rubio’s side enjoyed a convincing 6-1 success over AFC Hornchurch. Oran Jackson and Sam Nombe had initially given the Dons a 2-0 lead, while Andrew Osei-Bonsu completed an impressive evening’s work in the final minute. The Dons got off to the best possible start, opening the scoring as early as the sixth minute courtesy of an Jackson tap-in after the AFC Hornchurch keeper had dropped Thomas-Asante’s cross. Shortly afterwards, Peter Kioso saw a scissor-kick blocked before the lively Thomas-Asante brought the best out of the visiting keeper from distance. Dons’ No.10 came even closer to adding to the hosts’ advantage on 18 minutes but he couldn’t quite reach Hugo Logan’s dangerous delivery from the right. Rubio’s side deservedly doubled their lead just three minutes later as Nombe fired home at the back post after Thomas-Asante helped on Kioso’s cross. The visitors hit back with a rare foray forward but it was dealt comfortably by the Dons, who then almost made 3-0 however Osei-Bonsu was denied from 12 yards after a forward burst. The woodwork saved AFC Hornchurch from going 3-0 down on 38 minutes as defender Finn Tapp fired a shot against the bar – Logan saw his rebound well saved. However, there was nothing the visitors could do to deny the Dons a third on 49 minutes, Thomas-Asante picking himself up after being fouled in the area to score from the penalty spot with a Panenka. AFC Hornchurch reduced the arrears within a couple of minutes, though, as Warren Kayembe proded home after the Dons had failed to deal with a cross. The Dons soon restored their three-goal lead – and it came in some style! Logan picked out Thomas-Asante with an inch-perfect through-ball and the 17-year-old found the net with a stunning first-time lob from 20 yards. Kayembe missed a golden opportunity to make it 4-2 while, at the other end, the Dons came close from a Tapp cross and a Jackson header as they looked to put the gloss on a strong and professional display. There was a special moment on 89 minutes for Thomas Asante, who completed his treble with a smart strike from 20 yards. Osei-Bonsu put the icing on the cake in the final minute when he burst through and powered home from just inside the box. Starting XI: Pickworth; Tapp, Omar, Jackson (Hope 85); Kioso, Logan, Andrew Osei-Bonsu, Kasumu (Bell 46), Evans (Wright 65); Nombe, Thomas-Asante. Unused subs: Jones, Stratton. cup of tea
Great experience for the youth team against a youth team of a professional football club several leagues above. Great for them to play in a big stadium as well. Also scored a goal. Well done to all involved.
